excellent batting instruction book.

Excellent book. This coach really knows the mechanics of baseball batting. I would advise anyone who really want to understand what batting is about to get this book even if just as a reference. For some however, the details may be too technical.

My son sees Coach DeRenn for batting lessons. The book helps me get further insight in the significance of some of the basics.

Pure self serving sales job

This is a pure sales brochure by the author (a fee-based financial advisor), trying to drum up business, thinly disguised as a financial-advice book. He is trying to increase his business of selling his "custom designed" life insurance policies.

Full of inflated historical return data, designed to hook poorly informed seniors.

If something appears too good to be true, it is. This is a dangerously deceptive piece of self-promotion. CAUTION ADVISED!!!

Amazon should not carry this kind of material.

Well written, straight forward, easy to read!

As a financial advisor myself, I have read many investment/insurance/retirement planning books and I must say this was the best one yet. It was concise, to the point and very easy to read. Most of the books out there are too long or have too much detail for the average consumer to understand and provide a lot of fluff, this book doesn't do that at all. The writer gets right down to the specifics and gives good examples. He also doesn't knock other investment vehicles and in fact talks about managed money as another alternative to the insurance vehicles he speaks about. I am always looking for a good book to give clients that discusses some of the insurance technics that are available or fee based investment options and most are just not simplistic enough to use, this on the other hand does exactly what I need and helps my clients understand in a very short period what each concept is about and how it works. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn a little more about Index Insurance products and understands that this is a quick read that covers the basics very well.

One of the most important book on neurology in a decade.

For young research scientists who are interested in understanding the dynamics of the human brain, Koch's book provides the ideal introduction. Written in a precise yet easy style, the 21 Chapters of "Biophysics of Computation" begin at the beginning, introducing the reader to elementary electrical properties of membrane patches, linear cable theory, and the properties of passive dendritic trees. These introductory chapters are followed by two on the properties of synapses and the various ways that synapses can interact to perform logic on passive dendritic trees. Then the Hodgkin--Huxley formulation is discussed in detail, and various simplifying models are presented. As a basis for the Hodgkin--Huxley description, our present understanding of ionic channels is reviewed and the importance of calcium currents is emphasized. Further chapters discuss linearization of the H--H equations for small amplitude analysis, a careful examination of ionic diffusion, electrochemical properties of dendritic spines, synaptic plasticity, simple neural models, stochastic neural models. and the properties of bursting cells. Just about every facet of current neural knowledge is touched upon, with appropriate references to a carefully selected bibliography which will help the diligent novice delve deeply into whatever aspect of neural information processing that he or she chooses.
All of the above comprises an extended introduction to Chapters 17 through 19, which in the words of the author: "synthesize the previously learned lessons into a complete account of the events occuring in realistic dendritic trees with all of their attendant nonlinearities. We will see that dendrites can indeed be very powerful, nontraditional computational devices, implementing a number of continuous operations."
Thus "Biophysics of Computation" offers a definitive statement for the direction in which the neural research of the new century should go. Chapter 20, the penultimate, discussed several speculations for non-neural computation in the brain, ranging from molecular computing below the level of a single neuron to the effects of chemical diffusants (nitric oxide, calcium ions, carbon monoxide, etc.) on large numbers of neurons. Although this entire area has been neglected by the neuroscience community, Koch points out that there are no good reasons for doing so.
Finally, in the summary of Chapter 21, seven problems for future research projects are listed, emphasizing that the study of information processing in single neurons is very much a work in progress.

Excellent look at Neurophysics and Computatinal Processes of Neurons

I am still about 1 half a year away from having all of the math and biology needed to understand ALL of this book, but it's descriptions of single-unit computational processes are clear and easy to parse even without a the additional math and biology.

That said, this IS a book for professionals and students of Computational Neuroscience. It is not intended for a lay audience.

Short and Exceedingly Sweet

This is my favorite discourse book by Paramahamsa Nithyananda. It is a collection of question and answers. His answers are incredibly beautiful and uplifting and the insights (clicks as he likes to call them) abound and are transforming. I love being able to pick it up and in just a few pages feel touched and transformed at the deepest level of my being.

Illuminating

One of the questions that I have not yet found answered in books or on the Web is, why is the intense grief response to loss often wrenching sobbing and tears.

Believing that all human behavior has derived from the instinct to survive and reproduce the species, understanding the grief response has been most puzzling to me, especially the visible physical response.

Scientists have theorized that eye-lashes kept dust from the eyes, and tearing could wash dust or sand should it get in the eyes. But why does grief produce tearing, and beyond that breathless, chest and heart wrenching sobbing.

Seeking the answer to this question, I bought this book. While it isn't the readable, anecdotal book that is Ashley Montagu's book, Touching: The Human Significance of the Skin, nonetheless it is a rich source of what scientists have researched and concluded about grief and loss.

The conclusion the book left me with was that grief is indeed related to survival of the species. The younger the person dying, the stronger the grief, except in the case of care-givers to the extent that they are raising young ones, their death is grieved very deeply. We are hardwired to preserve young life and those who give birth to future generations.

While the book gave me this valuable understanding about grief, it did not answer my question about the evolutionary value of the tearing and sobbing. For that answer, I will have to continue my search.

Good overview but too theoretical

In this second volume, the author covers almost all soft issues: how to organize great meetings, active listening, conflict management tactics, motivation theories (such as Maslow's, Erg's, Herzberg's and Mc Clelland's), guidelines for successful negotiations and team development stages.
It is a good summary but is a bit short of practical examples or case studies to make this knowledge actionable.

a great, hairy

Dr Verma was one of my professors in grad school, and I believe he might agree that separating out the "human aspects" of any management job says a lot, a great, hairy, negative lot, about the current state of management science.
Project management, in particular, is like being on a large boat with no sail and no motor. The milling, disinterested crew members have each been given a tiny oar. To them, you are no one in particular, you are just the jerk who is trying to make them row with that ridiculous little stick. Would you say there might be "human aspects" to getting that boat across the ocean?Mentally review your high school and undergraduate years. Do you see clear evidence that you have a knack for making groups perform cooperatively without coercion or authority of any kind? No? That's great. There are a zillion closets out there that need your organization skills. Do yourself and your coworkers a favor, and stay the big, fat, H out of management.
Glance through what you are assigned from this text as quickly as you can scan in what you need to pass, and remember: it's an obstacle course, not an education.

A Covenant Symphany on Infant Baptism

In this book, Pastor D. Hyde has nicely and succinctly explained the biblical, covenantal, confessional, and historical doctrine of infant baptism. Without attacking those who reject infant baptism, Hyde shows how circumcision and baptism point to the same reality--gospel promises. He also sets forth the historical and confessional Reformed doctrine of the covenant of grace and what it has to do with baptizing infants of believing parents.

Hyde's booklet is a useful tool for Reformed Christians to strengthen their understanding of infant baptism; it is also an excellent book to give to those outside the Reformed faith who reject infant baptism. It will not add fuel to the sometimes fiery debates; rather, it will be a catalyst for patient and charitable conversations on this debate that dates back to the Reformation.

Short, sweet, biblical, confessional, historical, and practical, this book should be on your shelf if you've ever thought "Why do we baptize babies?" or "Why do Reformed churches baptize babies?"

A Different Book on Infant Baptism

Books defending infant baptism are plentiful. Over the years, many authors have tackled this subject and offered many solid defenses. But this book by United Reformed pastor (in Oceanside, CA) Daniel Hyde is different and the differences make this book worth recommending.

First of all, Pastor Hyde has offered a compilation of the best Biblical arguments for the baptism of the infant children of believers. The arguments are offered concisely but with footnotes and references for those who wish to dig deeper. The skeleton is here, so to speak, but those who wish to see more meat on the bones will not have far to look.

Second, the book presents the Biblical arguments with a sense of church-historical consciousness. Hyde is especially sensitive to the practices and beliefs of the first sixteen centuries of the Christian church. With his references to Reformed liturgies and creeds, he clearly shows that infant baptism has nothing to do with "popery" and everything to do with the apostolic church.

Finally, so far as I know, this is the only book on the subject that deals with the practice of dedication found in some evangelical circles. Pastor Hyde points out that many of the proof-texts used to support dedication are the same texts used to argue for infant baptism. He calls for consistency, but also points out the far greater richness of baptism - a sacrament that speaks of the sovereign grace of a covenant-making God.

This book could profitably be used in situations (i.e. church planting) where God is bringing in people not (yet) convinced of the infant baptism position. It could also be used for those who, having grown up Reformed, have had doubts planted in their minds. If I would make one small suggestion for an improvement it would be the inclusion of the Bible texts with the "Reformed Confessions on Baptism" in Appendix 1. Aside from that small matter, this is an excellent explanation of "why we baptize children."

Tatarsky began her writing career at sixteen, ghostwriting scientific technical articles under the guidance of her father, a chemist. She was an avid Nordic skier, but gave up the sport to save her knees for kung fu. She holds eight gold championship tournament medals from the United States Kuo Shu Federation.

Insinuated Accusations Lack Evidence

I live in Idaho near Sun Valley Resort, where my husband and I ski all winter with our two children. On my first of many trips to Grand Targhee, the white-out conditions common to the area disoriented me. Fearful of unknown terrain, I increased my vigilance to know where I was on the trails at all times.

Death in the Tetons recounts the story of a man who didn't maintain such awareness with tragic results.

In August 2010, my local paper published news of the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Fitzgerald family against Search and Rescue, et. al. I wondered then if the plaintiff understood the dangers of the large snowfalls Targhee receives, or if they comprehended the vastness of the surrounding rugged terrain. Throughout Death in the Tetons, many passages indicate that winter dangers in the Rockies are not fully understood by the plaintiff or author.

The preface states, “Interest [in Eddie’s death] has been broad, but until now the specifics of the incident have been purely speculation, innuendo and personal opinion.” Unfortunately, this book is much more of the same.

Emphasized throughout, the 911 dispatcher didn’t give to Search and Rescue (SAR) the full account of Eddie Fitzgerald’s description of his surroundings: in a meadow with downed trees near a stream. “This description only applied to one area near Targhee and that would have been the South Leigh Canyon,” states the introduction. The assertion that this description fits only one area is debatable. Regardless, the topographical map of the area shows several miles between Grand Targhee and the mouth of this canyon. In similar canyons, one would expect to find many meadows containing downed trees near a stream. The book repeatedly insists that rescuers “would have known immediately where [Eddie] was” (p 116) had they possessed his full description. This sounds unlikely. South Leigh Canyon presents acres and acres of terrain in which to search for a lost person.

Around midnight, searchers found ski tracks heading down a steep chute into South Leigh Canyon. Keeping SAR volunteers alive holds a higher priority than finding a lost person. Avalanche danger persuaded searchers to suspend the search until daylight. Over and over again, like an advertising campaign, Death in the Tetons employs dialog to question why the search isn’t continued from below along the valley floor. The preface states: “I have taken the liberty of creating additional dialogue and thoughts of the persons involved.” While some parts of the narrative are substantiated with deposition material from the lawsuit, none of the many statements advocating a valley floor search are supported with any evidence.

There are many good reasons to suspend a SAR operation during the night. Death in the Tetons doesn’t mention any of them. An avalanche can be triggered from below a slope just as easily as from above. Being at the bottom of a slope of unstable snow is a more dangerous place to be. It is much easier to find a person by following their snow tracks than approaching far away from their last known position, as a search from the entrance to South Leigh Canyon would have entailed. Continuing the search from the valley floor at night in risky avalanche conditions holds little merit.

The book insinuates that the head of the Wyoming Search and Rescue purposely suspended the search until morning so that a helicopter could be used, thereby increasing support for a helicopter fund-raising campaign. The book claims that he “wouldn’t have admitted it even to himself, but he was hoping the lost skier would not be found that night and they would be able to use the helicopter” because “every rescue accomplished via helicopter would further validate not only the fund drive for the new facility, but also the leasing and flight time fees paid by the county…” (p 121) This accusation imputes a wretched motive without a shred of evidence.

There is no bibliography, no index. There are some quotes from the depositions, unevenly interspersed. They must be a fragment of the whole if “[t]housands of pages of depositions were taken” as the preface claims. This book did not convince me of its accusations. If you’re looking for an impartial, thoroughly researched, and well documented book about the tragedy of Eddie “Cola” Fitzgerald’s death, this isn’t it.

Book Review, Death In The Tetons

This is a true story that could save lives. Carefully researched, set at a ski resort in the Tetons, it details a tragic chain of events that begins with a faulty map and leads to needless, heartbreaking death. Eddie Fitzgerald is forty-six years old, a man used to skiing all over the world with his mail carrier buddies. He is lost, alone on a snowy January night, unable to see much, trying to reach 911, weak cell phone signals, cell phone dying. I could not put the book down.

Tatarsky briefly interrupts the narration with an astonishing backstory. In a few understated pages, she sketches Eddie's journey to adulthood. Uncoordinated and rarely verbal, he is misdiagnosed as borderline moron at age seven. His parents keep trying until they find schools where their map-loving son with a near-photographic memory will thrive. As a teenager he faithfully commits 2.5 hours every day to his high school, becomes an ardent skier, and graduates second in his class. He does on to earn his B.S. in chemistry at Southampton University, and begins his twenty-year career in the postal service. By the chapter's end, readers understand that here is an amazing human being.

Tatarsky's account of the maelstrom of errors perpetrated by Grand Targhee Resort and the Wyoming and Idaho search and rescue agencies kept me glued to the book. It reads lille the unraveling of a mystery. Readers will agonize for Eddie, wondering why his friend Mario didn't pick up, why search and rescue doesn't come. The unconscionable callousness and indifference of the professionals tasked with Eddie's safety is infuriating... an incorrect, misleading map, a missing boundary rope line, and incompetent, inexperienced 911 dispatcher, a search and rescue coordinator with his own reasons for deferring further search until morning... The list does on. Fred, the ski group's leaders, Eddie's long time boss and friend, is so distraught about Mario's broken leg that he forgets the usual head count on the 4pm return bus to Jackson Hole. Unbelievable, no one realizes Eddie is missing until a call comes from Search and Rescue at 9:30PM.

"Death in the Tetons" was written to help prevent more tragedies, other deaths that ought never to have happened. Reading it is a powerful experience. Meeting and getting to know a little about Eddie Fitzgerald is time well spent. I strongly recommend it. In Eddie readers meet a man worth remembering, a truly outstanding man of quiet personal warmth who even as a young boy knew what it was to have courage and to persevere.

A well-written, chilling account of human error

This is a chilling (pardon the pun) account of human error run amok. It's hard to imagine how Eddie "Cola" Fitzgerald could have died, with so many skiing safety and security checks in place. The author is a skilled writer who tells a gripping true story, even though you know in advance how it ends. Even if you're not a skier, you'll be able to envision everything along the way.
