Magical storytelling

If you've read Shadow of the Wind, you'll know that there's not going to be a great deal of difference to the author's style and content when it comes to his earlier children's fiction, now being published in English. The Midnight Palace contains the same sense of adventure and mystery tied up in an elaborate family melodrama with literary references and a clear love of storytelling. Although there are less adult themes, The Midnight Palace is clearly the work of the same author, and it may even be better for the restraint imposed on it being a work for younger readers, and all the more effective in sustaining its magical qualities.

The Midnight Palace is the meeting place of a group of orphans in Calcutta in 1932 who have formed a secret society where they meet and tell stories, and there's a description in the book of the place exuding an "aura of magic and dreams that rarely exists beyond the blurred memories of our early years". Carlos Ruiz Zafón's writing (which reads extremely well here in a fluid translation) exudes the same aura, finding a potent mix of exoticism, symbolism, adventure and history and tying it into the destiny of two twins separated at birth who, as they reach 16 years of age, are being threatened by a dark magician.

There are many reasons why the book works so well, the author finding an exotic setting, a wonderful group of young orphans each with their own special talents to help each other out, and a thrilling dark fantasy mystery tied up in India's desire for independence, but principally the book extols the virtues of storytelling and thereby inspires the imagination of investigative young minds. Wonderfully written, The Midnight Palace is itself a terrific example of the power of those very same qualities that will work for children and for adults wishing to rekindle that sense of wonder that exists in "the blurred memories of our early years".

The Midnight Palace begins on a stormy night in Calcutta on May 1916; Lieutenant Peake is being chased by assassins as he carries two babies. The lieutenant is able to get them safely into the arms of a woman who he knows will protect them with her life. The woman then makes the momentous choice that in order to protect both children they will need to be separated from one another, so she abandons Ben at the doorstep of St. Patrick's Orphanage with only a letter explaining that his parents were murdered and the murderer swore to kill the child and any descendents.

The night the baby is discovered at the orphanage a strange man named Jawahal stops by unexpectedly and pries for information about the new orphan. The director of the orphanage suspects something is amiss and doesn't share any information with the stranger. Jawahal is particularly interested on what age the orphans are released into the world on their own - 16 years old - and he vows to return at that time.

Ben grows up not knowing his past but gets along well with the other orphans. He also starts a secret society with 6 other orphans, holding meetings at a local abandoned mansion they nickname The Midnight Palace. In May 1932, their lives change forever as every member turns 16 and is about to be released into the world to live their own lives, their secret society disbanded. Unfortunately, things don't go as smoothly as planned, and Ben's past steps back into his life in the form of a girl that appears on the doorstep of the orphanage as they are having a celebration to mark the special occasion. They must all work together in order to discover the mysteries of their past in the hopes they can stop a madman from stealing their future.

Confession:

I really liked The Midnight Palace; I have been a huge fan of Carlos Ruiz Zafon ever since I read The Shadow of the Wind. I loved the atmosphere and setting, it's so creepy and the suspense is palpable. The villain is mysterious and otherworldly with supernatural powers, and you're desperately trying to figure out his connection to the children and why he wants them dead. The characters are very likeable, they each have their own unique quirks and interests and they work well together as a group. The pace of the book is top notch, from the very first scene of the book you are turning pages trying to figure out where the story is going and how it will end. This is probably one of the creepiest villains I have encountered in YA so far. I liked it, I liked it A LOT!

I recommend this for all Carlos Ruiz Zafon fans, and YA fans who like mysteries and suspense.

Another Great Novel From Zafon

Once again, Carlos Ruiz Zafon has created characters, atmosphere, and a story that exhibit why he is a master in the tradition of Dumas. This sequel to "The Prince of Mist" gives us a fine story as well as a glimpse into the development of an author who would later write the masterpiece "The Shadow of the Wind." The only drawback to reading this book is knowing that it will be at least another year before a new one comes out.

Steven Sedlmayr, from a very young age, has always been a very curious person. If your health and the health of your loved ones is important

If you want to be healthy, by that I mean healthy beyond Allopathic medicine, this book is a must. Mr Sedlmayr explains not only the important
role of water, but what the body must do to convert today's municipal water into something usable. Effects of fluoridation, chlorination and
many other chemicals and drugs(yes prescription drugs are in all water now) are brought to light in his book. Different ph values the body needs
and what is known as EZ Water. Health truly does start with the basics...Water being the most basic. If your health and the health of your
loved ones is important, The Digestive Process and The Role Of Water In Digestive Health is a must.

Great and Important!

A truly great book! This book is a thorough examination of the role water plays in our survival and well-being and, more importantly, why different types of water can have more benefit to us than others. Steven Sedlmayr’s long history as a successful inventor and researcher has provided him the perfect background to write a book that challenges the reader to see water from a new perspective. A perspective which is increasingly being embraced by those on the cutting edge of academia and water research. Sedlmayr provides a highly detailed and well supported account of his theories in a manner that is accessible to all. I highly recommend this book!!!

Set in a secondary school during the late '60s, it juxtaposes narrator Jean "Stevie" Stevenson's coming-of-age story with the emergence of the civil rights movement. Its confrontational title is explained by Stevie's mother, who says, "The old folks in the South used to tell that to children so they wouldn't want to drink coffee. The last thing anybody wanted to be was black." From newcomer Sinclair, the coming-of-age story of a black girl in 1960's Chicago. Jean ``Stevie'' Stevenson is a child of the working poor. Her father is a hospital janitor, her mother is a bank teller, and Grandma owns a popular South Side chicken-stand. Sixth-grader Stevie, meanwhile, is tired of her mother's rules, her refusal to countenance ``black English,'' her attempts to make Stevie a dreaded ``L7'' (square). Stevie's dream is to be popular and cool, and her wish is granted when ``all the way cool'' Carla invites her to a party. Soon Stevie has had her first period, her first kiss (from sexy Yusef), and is learning that cool is not necessarily kind, for that dog Yusef has his classmates spy while the two show themselves to each other. All this is fresh and authentic. The trouble starts with Stevie's arrival at high school, which coincides with the ``black is beautiful'' period (it's 1967). Here, the flow is disrupted by obvious setups intended to make points about race and sexual orientation. Stevie and Carla happen on their white art-teacher having a date with a black man--puppets miming the interracial experimentation of the period. At school, the sympathetic Nurse Horn puts Stevie in a quandary: Is it possible to be friends with a white woman, who may even be ``funny'' (lesbian)? The question overshadows Stevie's almost consummated relationship with Sean, a straight-arrow senior, and although the good nurse answers it in best Ann Landers style (``because you have a schoolgirl crush on me doesn't make you a homosexual''), Stevie ends up dwarfed by her author's agenda. A Great Book For Teens

In the book Coffee Will Make You Black, by April Sinclair, the lead character Jean Stevenson, Stevie to her friends, tells in a narrative perspective of her adolescent years, growing up in Chicago in the 1960's. The book is like Stevie's diary. She tells you her experiences with boys, girls, love, sex, popularity, school and racism in a comical and to-the-point fashion. The book is a quick, easy, fun read that hooks you from the start. It deals with very realistic issues that are fun and interesting to read about. The book makes you feel like you are part of Stevie's chaotic life. She gives you the opportunity to share her deepest, darkest, secrets. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the book an 8. I enjoyed reading it greatly, and finished it in one day. I liked reading it because it dealt with issues that I deal with. It tells of Stevie's hard times with boys, other girls, sex, love, popularity, which are all important to me now as a freshman in high school. It didn't take very long to get into the book because the first page is a humorous anecdote about a boy asking if 12 year old Stevie is a virgin. Stevie, confused with the meaning of virgin, goes home and asks her mamma. The whole book is little anecdotes like the one above so I liked it from the start. The book isn't very short yet the words and vocabulary are very easy and simply written so stumbling over big words is not a problem. Nothing very big happens in the book, it stays rather monotone throughout. Something I found a little hard to understand was the slang. Since Stevie is growing up in the sixties in Chicago, there are bound to be differences in slang but overall the read is easy. It may be hard for younger people to read this book because they might not get what some of the terms mean. This book reminded me of many movies about teenage-hood. Like American Pie or Election. I have never read another book by April Sinclair but I enjoyed this book and will read other works by this author. In class we have reading groups where there are four groups of five kids and each group reads a different book. To decide which book to read the teacher read the first pages of every book. I enjoyed the first page so I signed up to read this book. Since the book is written from a females perspective, I think that girls would relate and enjoy reading it more because it deals with female issues. I can imagine a guy not understanding the complete intent of the author. The book is very funny so I think that the reader should have a good sense of humor, and maybe someone that grew up in the sixties could relate to an even greater extent. " What does 'coffee will make you black mean mama?' 'The old folks in the South used to tell that to children so they wouldn't want to drink coffee. The last thing anybody wanted to be was black."' This quote is from page 111 in the book. I chose this quote not only because it is obviously the line in which the title of the book comes from, but because it also represents the feelings about different races at the time. I don't get why people ever thought that darker skin made a difference. Personally I think all racism is ridiculous and that this quote is very interesting. To think that back then the children were told that in order to stay lighter they shouldn't drink coffee is ridiculous. It shows that back then they weren't proud of their skin color and would do anything, like not drink coffee, to stay lighter. I wonder if maybe this saying was also to keep kids from just drinking coffee. Maybe they didn't want the children to drink too much caffeine. In any case being darker was the worst thing imaginable. I hope that this quote shows a little bit of how the book is written. This is a more serious moment in the book but I thought it was important. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Great coming-of-age story

I'm tempted to call this a black coming of age story, but why identify it as such when it's a great book no matter what your ethnicity?
Stevie grows up among a lot of political and social change, and the generation gap between how she sees things and how her mother views the white and black line is telling. As she goes through grade school through high school she starts questioning her parents mores, and figuring out how to deal with early encounters with interracial dating....
This book is also peppered with great bits of humor, including "Growing up reminded me a little bit of Hide and Go Seek. When it was your time to grow up, Nature said "Here I come, ready or not." And nature could always find you." This book will tell (remind?) you what it's like being a tomboy..., or first learning what a virgin is. Highly recommended.

It isn't scolding

I read this book so many years ago, and mainly because it was causing such a controversy at a school I just had to know what was "so bad" about this book.
It's a coming of age story where you meet young Stevie, a L7 (square) whose learning all about life and what it has to offer as far as what is a friend? a period? and the big deal about sex?
I think April Sinclair did an excellent job, we need books because sometimes mama can't talk to you because she's too afraid! I was tempted to call the school up and ask why the big fuss?

This book does a nice job reminding us of the big picture of human ...

This book does a nice job reminding us of the big picture of human energy systems (aerobic, anaerobic lactic and anaerobic alactic). The essential agenda of the book is to counteract the pervasive HIIT/circuit driven training philosophy and attempt to answer the question of which energy system fighters should be training through objective means. It shines at explaining the differences between the energy systems and what sorts of activities each is associated with.

The book, while touting its own scientific backing constantly, does not contain any citations to back up claims from actual literature. This is very common in sports science books. In fact most coaches don't feel the need to justify their methods at all but rather just say that their athletes are good so clearly it works. However, the book is packed full of reminders every 5 pages that it's backed by the latest science and it falls just as flat in backing up those claims. For instance, the author claims that the anaerobic lactic system can be improved by about 15-30% through training. Where did he get that number? He gives 9 distinct protocols to train the aerobic system which supposedly each cause distinct adaptations. These are clearly mere anecdotes from his experience training athletes. Nothing wrong with anecdotes, but the book uses them in place of the science that was its entire selling point.

Now, there are places where the author has clearly looked at the research but omitted the details for the sake of his audience. For instance, he mentions a study done on the energy production done by each system at various running distances (the important detail was even at 400m the aerobic system dominates). This study was real, but the author didn't cite it. Thus, the book is not a treatise which defends the author's point of view on energy systems to coaches, scientists and skeptics.

You'll see in other reviews that the book also is not a template-driven prescription for athletes. You won't find a ready-made template that you can apply blindly, which is probably for the best. While the book is well written and gives good overviews of the energy systems, if it isn't for scientists, isn't for coaches, and isn't for athletes, then who is it for exactly?

This book is absolutely fabulous. If you're looking to read more about grappling technique than metabolic pathways, this book is not for you. If you're looking to increase metabolic capacity and want to know not only how, but also why the how works, this is for you. It's a little expensive, but definitely worth it.

Statistical Modelling and Inference for this Century

I used "In All Likelihood" as a basis for the 13 week 3rd year Mathematical Statistics/ Statistical Inference course I have almost finished teaching. Finding this book at Amazon was my very good fortune. It is exactly the way I would have tried to write such a course but I couldn't have done as good a job as Pawitan.
I like this book because it covers all the theory, such as, sufficiency, completeness, minimum variance unbiased estimation, large sample asymptotics etc. But the beauty of the book lies in the relevant, modern examples. Likelihood functions are liberally graphed for the many examples. These are created in R; if you are an R user, or wish to be, you'll like the availability of the source code. If you're not into R, it won't make a difference to the usability of the book.
Books like Bickel & Doksum, Casella & Berger and Rice, have the theory, but not the range of practical examples that add so much to "In All Likelihood". Pawitan's theoretical sections are comparatively easy to follow. Pawitan points out important results rather than the reader needing to surmise what bits of theory are useful in practice.
On the other hand, since reading Pawitan I can now read sections out of McCullough and Nelder, and other applications books, no longer feeling I have missed some important background theory.
I see signs of good teaching practice throughout "In All Likelihood" that make it easy to learn and teach from. For example, difficult concepts are often initially introduced in an example and then reintroduced in technical detail. This way the learner feels some familiarity the second time around.
Semester is nearly over. We covered the first nine chapters (out of 18) in 38 hours of lectures. I'm reading the rest of the book now. Every page or two something else I have heard, seen or read in the past begins to make more sense. Examples of topics in the second half of the book are the EM algorithm, Generalized Estimating Equations and random/mixed effects models. I told my students that if they considered buying a book for their future in statistics, "In All Likelihood" is a very good one.

Excellent book---well worth the money

I first heard about this book in 2006 at the International Meeting of the Psychometric Society (in Montreal) from a colleague. I ordered it from Amazon the day I heard about it from one of the conference computers. It's great and I've found examples in it for teaching plus a lot of things that I simply didn't know, didn't remember, or didn't really understand the first time.

The examples make this book really useful compared to more technical texts like Bickel & Doksum or Lehmann. (These books are useful, of course, but not so much as texts for courses.) Pawitan's book has tons of really great little examples that bring the concepts down to earth for the reader. For instance, when he plots four score functions (normal, Poisson, binomial and Cauchy), you *see* immediately why estimation is more difficult in models such as the Cauchy compared to the normal. It also builds intuition about what the score function actually is. I have unpublished notes from John Marden (Statistics, UIUC), who was my statistical theory professor, which are very, very good. Pawitan's book is on par. The fact that the R code is available is fantastic.

Just a Great Book

For a non-measure theoretic, applied stat text this is the best one you can buy - by far. Excellent examples (superb discussion of sufficiency and the invariance principle) and all the R Code. Great for self-study or the advanced undergrad/beginning grad classroom.

About the Author
Sullivan is professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He has a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Wicks is an assistant professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She obtained a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

A practical guide for the manager

I first used this book as a student-I found it useful then, today I insist that all managers reporting to me review, and use, the concepts and techniques provided by the authors.
The book is useful, in that concepts are well explained, the examples are relevant, but most important for me is that it provides managers who have little or no experience in determining project costs with a handy means (including formulae and worked examples) of doing so.
I have tried to get copies of the most recent edition, the popularity seems to be such that the book is sold out. I most readily recommend this to anyone who needs to justify capital expenditure, who needs to do project costing, and who has to prepare proposals for submission to the boss (or the board of directors)in order to obtain funds for capital expansion, refurbishment or simply equipment upgrades.

Useful to the student and the professional

Just as engineers must accurately model technical solutions to a problem, they must also model the economic impact of those technical solutions. This is a very good book for both the engineering student and the practicing engineer. Unlike many texts on straight economics, it is not just filled with narrative. It has many well-explained formulas and examples using those formulas throughout. The numerous exercises included throughout the book involve open-ended problem statements and iterative problem-solving skills, which are the real-world skills you'll need on the job. Various engineering disciplines are presented. FE exam-style questions have been added to help prepare engineering students for that milestone examination. Passing the FE exam is a first step in getting licensed as a "Professional Engineer" or PE. A good companion to this book is the Schaum's Outline on Engineering Economics. This is one of those textbooks where having the latest edition is really better, since the laws of finance are man-made and do change over time. This is one of the most readable treatments of quantitative approaches to field research that I have encountered. The author begins by directing the reader's attention to an exceedingly important and fundamental issue: good research must be preceded by clear thinking and an equally clear question. The writing style is excellent and the author engages the reader with references to his own research. Book = Lecture

This book is written as if you were sitting in his class listening to a lecture. Most of what he says in class is the exact same. It can be simple and confusing at times but I think that is just the material. He tends to ramble which appears in his book to some extent. It is not a step by step book but rather one designed to make you able to create your method.

Good research methods book

A very down-to- earth approach to doing cross-cultural research from scratch as it were. Language is a bit more casual than I would prefer ( the author seems to ignore that "data" is a plural noun, and as such he writes "data is" throughout the book). That becomes tiring and takes away from the overall quality of reasoning of the book.
