One of the two best Beatles books available

Slight correction to those saying every song is written in its recorded key: "Revolution" is one of the few songs to be recorded twice, the earlier being acoustic-based "Revolution 1" serving as a cut on the White Album, and shortly after as a more electric single B-side (to "Hey Jude"). The former was written and recorded first in the key of A, the latter is in the key of B, and the lead sheet inside this book is inexplicably written in the key of C.

I agree though, great book, in that it's a great way to have all of their stuff for under forty bucks. I suppose you could go for "The Beatles Complete Chord Songbook" if you're thrown by standard notation conventions, but this book is spiral bound and lays better than that one. It's not perfect -- in classic Hal Leonard fashion, intros to many songs are missing (anything from a few measures, as in "And I Love Her," to an entire progression and melody, as in "I Am The Walrus"). A relief..

I have a copy of "The Beatles Complete" which is a Japanese publication that is thicker than a telephone book, hard bound, and weighs a ton. It has useless detail like drum staves so that each song takes four pages to get through. I got pretty good at turning the pages, but it won't sit on a piano, and it's pretty hard to learn a song when it is not on a single page. Furthermore the publisher has managed to engage charlatan transcribers who have gotten half the words wrong. They seem to think checking the published lyrics would be unethical, or perhaps they think their non-native and illogical made up words more creative? Beats me. She rubs you, yeah yeah yeah! The book is good as a cutting board or excelent as a weight while the glue sets after a guitar repair. Now the review of the Fake Book:

The songs are all on a single or facing page. Sweet. It sits on a piano stand. Far out. The lyrics are correct.

I tried a test, sitting the book on my bed and playing through random songs on guitar. Some of the chord diagrams are not ideal, but playing by the chord names, with only an occasional cheat off the diagrams is a very flexible method. Perhaps a chord is mislabled here and there, a major for a minor, and there seems to be a Bm missing as the second chord in 'across the universe'.

This can be overlooked. The binding is a bit weak. The plastic ring is good because it lays flat, but it can detach itself and the cover paper is too light. But if you consider this something to use, a bit of wear and tear shouldn't be too troubling. I'll get a new one if this gives up the ghost.

Natural, effortless lean-ness... Who would've thought? Thank you Gillian! :-)

Life-changing book. I posted a longer review under Gillian's book "Ditching Diets." Both books are superb. This one's my favorite. Each time I read it the message deepens. (I purchased the UK version before the US version was available). I always knew I needed to change my perspective but didn't know *how.* This de-mystified the whole thing. Very liberating book! It's been about 6 months & every aspect of my life has benefited. Thank you Gillian. You're a Godsend, a treasure & a gift! Best wishes always.

Update: Once I de-coupled "losing weight" & "eating less" the weight loss happened by itself. Weird, right? The change is so startling that I sometimes wonder how it didn't occur to me sooner. Sure, it's been a progressive gradual process of making better life choices over several decades. However this book crystallized the whole thing. Food no longer occupies my mind. What a relief! It feels like a miracle. Overeating lost its pull. In my experience, this book describes the hidden (but now obvious) way to natural, effortless lean-ness. Who would've thought? The idea of addictive desire was also helpful, but the big take home for me is that now eating choices are based on "How good can I feel?" As in, "How does it get *even* better than this?" What a wonderful thing to explore. Although I'm eating significantly less, I feel much more fulfilled & not at all deprived. Life has opened up. Not only is "outer life" more satisfying, "inner life" (including meditation) is deeper as well. Thanks again & again, Gillian. You have a way with words & use them our advantage. Much appreciation!

Second update: I ordered Gillian's audio mp3 (available on her website) last night & it redeemed itself in less than 24 hours. I listened to it on the way home from work & immediately felt compelled to attend my favorite version of hot yoga instead of relaxing with a hearty dinner. It reminds me *why* I eat less--because it's so much fun to do what I love any time! After an awesome class, I came home, showered, ate a light meal & felt enormously satisfied. It was like hitting the reset button. I'm usually more of a morning person. But listening to Gillian's words gave me fresh energy & turned my whole evening around. It illuminated positive options & voila!--a super fun experience ensued. Imaginary concerns evaporated (you know, like appearance etc.) & I felt & continue to feel so good in my own skin! For me, Gillian's teachings go hand-in-hand with my non-duality Advaita practice. Practical stuff that goes deep. (BTW track #5 is my current favorite--#6, #7 & #10 are good pivot points for me, too). Thanks again!

Silly Book

The Rookie Club is a group of female police officers who seem to solve most of the crimes. Male officers are very much in the background and are portrayed as bumbling, incompetent or corrupt.

Unfortunately in this book the female officers have the annoying "silly me" attitude that many authors give to policewomen. Silly me, I let my phone battery run down. Silly me, I went to visit a suspect alone without telling anyone where I was going. Silly me, I left my gun on the seat of my car when I went inside.

Poor writing makes it difficult to keep track of people's names and who they are in the cast of characters. The author compounds the problem by switching randomly between first and surname making it even more confusing.

As for the police procedures, there are very few and what there are don't ring true.

I read the book through to the end. Silly me.

Can't wait to read more from this author

The Rookie Club was first brought to my attention by the author's myspace page. I initially thought it sounded too much like James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series and didn't think about reading it. After seeing the book everywhere I turned I thought I was probably being unfair and picked it up. I'm so glad I did. This book stands very firmly on its own two feet. I loved all the characters and can't wait to read more about them. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes police procedurals or just a good book with good writing and a great story.

Well researched, well written, compelling mystery thriller

The first thing I noticed when I browsed through the pages of "The Rookie Club" was the crisp, taut writing style. Nothing seemed out of place. I could just start reading on any page, and quickly I was drawn into the action and the events being described. When you turn to page one and start reading, the drama builds very quickly. You jump right into the story and you don't want to stop.

Originally published in 1918, this brilliant collection of letters and magazine articles spans nearly thirty years of Muir's writing and is one of the lesser known gems of the Muir canon. Gathered shortly after Muir's death by family friend William Frederic Bade, these passages are learned, funny, exalted, and quirky in one amazing turn after another. Here is Muir caught in a snowstorm below the peak of Mount Shasta; interviewing the one remaining miner in a Nevada ghost town; bathing "clean as a saint" in the Great Salt Lake, and sparring with Mormon elders; exploring the forests of Puget Sound, and climbing Mount Rainier; peering into the Grand Canyon, "a collection of stone books covering thousands of miles of shelving, tier on tier." Steep Trails is Muir at his wondering, joyful, ebullient best.

The original arch-druid

Long before the late David Brower's environmental activism at the helm of the Sierra Club and after led to his designation as the `arch-druid,' John Muir was making epic journeys through the (then much more truly wild) wilderness of the U.S. western states and jotting down his observations as well as his thoughts on Nature and life in general. "Steep Trails" is a collection of pieces covering Muir's various travels through and about Northern California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington and the Grand Canyon. Writing mainly in the second half of the 19th century, Muir describes the terrain and its characteristics in simple and effective prose, but with the meticulous attention to detail and accuracy of a hard-nosed naturalist. One also cannot help but be impressed with the fact that Muir usually set off on his wilderness treks (often during the winter) with only the most meager of supplies and without the high-tech equipment and various Gore-Tex accoutrements deemed indispensible by today's rugged outdoorsmen. What comes out of Muir's writings and sets him apart from most of his contemporaries is his view that America's vast natural wealth and beauty should be appreciated in and of themselves, above and beyond their functional and economic value as natural resources to be exploited. Despite his firm belief in `progress' and `civilization' as these terms were understood in the nineteenth century (hence his often disparaging commments about the local Indians), at several points Muir showed that he understood the potential dangers of excessive economic development and industrialization.

Wonderful For Writers

I bought another baby name book, 10001 Baby Names, and hardly use it. My old standby, the New Age Baby Name Book, used to name my now teenager, is alpha girl section boy section. This one is far more useful because of the division by ethnicity. For my purposes, I'm often making up character names and use an ethnic group as a basis sometimes, and name my characters from Earth out of this book. It's easy to use, and I can use the meanings as whatever purpose in the story, too. I haven't found any outright errors in what names I'm using, although I've noticed that some of the meanings are different between New Age Baby Name Book and this one, but I only have a little knowledge of how to pronounce German [4 quarters in college long ago] so I can't say how accurate her research is. I can say that she writes very interesting copy and I often enjoy just looking at the background notes. Apparently someone at Perigee Books listens; older reviews complain of the lack of an index and there is an extensive one in the edition I bought 3 months ago. Teresa Norman's bibliography looks good, and she cites some works from university presses. I saw complaints from other reviewers and would like to mention that any published author has no control over proofreaders who think they know more about how to spell than the author. No author proofreads her own book. What we see in published form is a team effort, so maybe Perigee should hear from you with the knowledge of particular spelling errors etc. Teresa Norman herself might thank you! I have never been published, but know several authors [not Teresa Norman!] and a movie producer...

King of the jungle of baby name books

Before becoming a dad (well, I will be one in October), if you paid to me I would have never guessed I'd be reading a book on this topic today, but you see: here I am, browsing through a handful of books off of the shelves looking for ideas. Here's our case: my wife and I wanted to name our baby with a beautiful name (how original, huh?) that is not repeated anywhere near (family and close friends) and that plays well both ways, in English AND Spanish without anyone needing to twist their mouths to pronounce it.
I had a chance to check out this book by Teresa Norman, and found it to be the best among books of baby names. What I liked most about it was the classificacion by geographic origin (American, French, Arabic, etc.) which opened up a whole new window into names we would have normally not considered that actually were not invented by the author, or derived from brands (like I saw in some other book that I prefer to refrain from quoting). Beside that, each name is explained in detail so you can learn more about its origin, meaning, etc. Also worth considering is "From Aaron to Zoe".

A World of Baby Names

Teresa Norman's A World of Baby Names is an interesting collection of names from around the world. However, the book suffers mightily from poor editing. There is poor coordination between sections, as though whoever read the entries from one country never cross-referenced other sections. Within countries, there are frequent errors in how names are pronounced. For example, "sz" in Hungarian is pronounced /s/. In some names this is transliterated correctly, but in other names, incorrect pronunciations are given. The Hawaiian section needs a total overhaul. Many, many names are given with some other version as the preferred one with the correct Hawaiian name given as an alternate form. In the book as a whole, some etymology is very good, but some is rather slipshod and, once again, inconsistent from entry to entry regarding the same root name. It gives the appearance to the book that the writer is poorly informed about her subject and relied on poor sources, with insufficient research into the accuracy of these sources. The author would have done better to rely on speakers of the languages of the various countries as her editors and primary sources, rather than the books in her extensive bibliography. For anyone seriously interested in the origins and pronunciations of names around the world, this book is of questionable value.
