Fast Paced Vampires with a Middle-Age Heroine!
By William Penn
It's vampire paranormal romance for the middle-aged woman! What I love about this book is that the heroine, Laurel, is a fifty-two-year-old clinical hypnotherapist. I cannot even remember the last time I picked up a genre book where the main character was over twenty. As a forty-something myself, I found this fact refreshing as I could relate to where Laurel was in her life. The book picks up in chapter two, intriguing you with a unique take on vampires, and a fast plot. I won't let out any spoilers here, but I definitely have not seen this particular twist on vampires before. Since the author has a PhD in hypnotherapy herself, the details of her practice come through and add a level of enjoyment to the read.
If you love romance, vampires, and are tired of reading about teeny-boppers, then you'll enjoy this book!

Very poorly written
By Rebecca
The story was entertaining, but it was hard to get into the book due to the poor writing. The sentences were choppy, grammar was poor, and the pacing of the story was horrible - even for a free book on the Nook! It could have been a very good read had the author taken the time to edit and streamline it a bit better. The "ending" was more of the ending to a chapter, so I am sure that there will be a sequel coming out at some point. If the sequel is offered as a free book, I may start it to see if the writing improves, but I'm not holding my breath.

Dreams and Vampires a prelude to an epic fantasy/sci-fi
By Pygmy Amazon Reviews
Dreams and Vampires by Dee Krull Dreams and Vampires by Dee Krull cover

The first of this series is an introduction to the world and characters of Htrae. The story begins on earth with a psychologist specializing in regression hypnotherapy. Strange events occur as Laurel's patients begin having nightmare dreams after their regression hypnosis therapy sessions.

The first part of the book concentrates on character development of Laurel and plot set up for the second part of the book. The second part further develops the plot along with character development of the male protagonist, a vampire, as well as the heroine, Laurel. Htrae is an alternate world with vampires, werewolves, witches, and humans all of whom live very long lives.

This first book is more of a long preface to the Saga of the World Called Htrae. It is well written, but if you are not committed to reading the entire series then don't start this one. This is not a stand alone book. The end is not the end, rather it has an abrupt "to be continued" ending without resolution or climax.

I give this book a four star rating. The character development and plot background development for the series were well done and essential. The novel was not as captivating in drawing me into the characters as I would have liked. However it was interesting enough to make me want to jump right into the next part of the story. Adults 18+ because of explicit sex.

Sexual Minorities and Politics: An Introduction, by Jason Pierceson

The political representation and involvement of sexual minorities in the United States has been highly contested and fiercely debated. As recent legislative and judicial victories create inroads towards equality for this growing population, members and advocates of these minorities navigate evolving political and legal systems while continuing to fight against societal and institutional resistance. Sexual Minorities and Politics is the first textbook to provide students with an up-to-date, thorough, and comprehensive overview of the historical, political, and legal status of sexual and gender minorities. Skillfully synthesizing the research of political scientists, political theorists, and historians, Jason Pierceson describes the history of the LGBT rights movement, chronicles the building of political and legal movements and the responses to them, examines philosophical debates within and about the movement, and assesses the current state of the politics and policies concerning sexual minorities. In addition to carefully structured analyses and contextual explanations, the text provides lists of key terms and discussion questions in each chapter to aid student comprehension and fuel classroom debate.

Scientists are just now beginning to find common ground in their understanding of consciousness, which may pave the way for a unified explanation of how and why we experience and understand the world around us. This book offers an invaluable introduction to the field, brilliantly weaving together the various theories that have emerged as scientists continue their quest to uncover the profound mysteries of the mind--and of human nature itself.

Review

"An impressive tour, centered around the question of what we might be able to discover scientifically regarding the role played by conscious experience in the functioning of the mind."--Brian D. Josephson, Nobel Laureate in Physics

From the Back Cover
Combining psychology with brain science, Baars brilliantly brings his subject to life with a metaphor that has been used to understand consciousness since the time of Plato and Aristotlethe mind as theater. Here consciousness is seen as a "stage" on which our sensations, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings play to a vast, silent audience (the immensely complicated inner-workings of the brain's unconscious processes). Behind the scenes, silent context operators shape conscious experience; they include implicit expectations, self systems, and scene setters. Using this framework, Baars presents compelling evidence that human consciousness rides on top of biologically ancient mechanisms. In humans it manifests itself in inner speech, imagery, perception, and voluntary control of thought and action. Topics like hypnosis, absorbed states of mind, adaptation to trauma, and the human propensity to project expectations on uncertainty, all fit into the expanded theater metaphor. As Baars explores our present understanding of the mind, he takes us to the top laboratories around the world, where we witness some of the field's most exciting breakthroughs and discoveries. And throughout the book, Baars has sprinkled numerous and often highly amusing on-the-spot demonstrations that illuminate the ideas under discussion.

Highly readable
By Amazon Customer
Bernard Baars presents a highly readable account of his Global Workspace (GW) theory of consciousness. The GW is a cognitive architecture model that is based on a simple, theater metaphor. Briefly, it imagines that consciousness occurs on a center stage. The stage is equivalent to a working memory buffer. Conscious experience consists of a spotlight area on this stage. The spotlight is shifted, to illuminate various contents, according to both involuntary and voluntary forms of attentional control. The players that compete (and cooperate) for access to the stage include the variety of exteroceptive senses, interoceptive senses, and more abstract ideas. The theater stage has a limited capacity, but it creates vast access, by broadcasting information to a variety of unconscious routines and effectors (the audience). A variety of context operators also work `behind the scenes' to provide the necessary stage backdrops.

In this short and concise book, Baars devotes a chapter to each of the components of the theater metaphor. While the GW theory of consciousness is a cognitive model, Baars also delves a little into brain anatomy. He pays some attention, for example, to the Extended Reticular-Thalamic Activating System (ERTAS).

One of the things not fully addressed by Baars in his model is the subjective nature of consciousness. For example, with any conscious experience, there is a sense of self in the act of knowing. Baars makes no mention of the work of Damasio on the primitive self-representational mechanisms in the brain, though he does develop to some extent, his own idea of `self as deep context'.

Baars believes that the way to make progress on the issue of consciousness is by gathering empirical evidence. Once consciousness can be treated as a variable, we can begin to make some headway in understanding it. One way of treating consciousness as a variable is through the method of contrastive phenomenology in which a single experimental task is performed under both conscious and unconscious conditions, with the differences between the two being closely tracked.

Overall, the theater metaphor has considerable heuristic value - it allows for a considerable amount of information to be packaged in a very simple manner. It turns out that the general mechanism (a limited-capacity center stage which creates vast access to specialized control systems) is a sound design solution for complex nervous systems.

Thank You, Dr. Baars
By James Gerofsky
I became interested in "philosophy of mind" several years ago and have since read a variety of books dealing with the mind-body-consciousness problem. "In The Theater of Consciousness" was my first read from the field of cognitive psychology. And a good read it was. It provides a concise yet comprehensive review of what can be said about human consciousness from the empirical perspective. This book is ten years old now and obviously misses a decade of new research. But I suspect that most of what Bernard Baars presents is still relevant, and provides a good foundation for what cognitive psychology is doing these days. It also helps to enhance one's understanding of what the neuroscientists and artificial intelligence people are up to.

In evaluating a technical book intended for a lay audience, the author's attitude towards his or her readership is very important to me. Dr. Baars displays a very considerate attitude. He provides a lot of drawings, conceptual diagrams, try-it-yourself exercises, and even a few brain scan photos (quite impressive for 1997; were the book to be re-issued today, it could include a lot more of these, given the progress made in neuro-scanning since then). In the Epilogue, Dr. Baars expresses his gratitude "to the reader who has come this far on our shared journey". My goodness, an academic doyen who actually thanks the layman for reading his book! That's quite rare (and quite refreshing).

Dr. Baars' "theater spotlight" and "global workspace" metaphors for consciousness and its relationship to unconscious processes (and even to neuron-level workings) are indeed very useful and thought-provoking. This book will indeed help you to understand why your mind does what it does. For example, the section on "attention" as the funnel of consciousness and "absorption" as the mind's focus upon a subject absorbing all of its limited capacity to be conscious, helps to explain how we often "suspend our disbelief" when watching TV or a movie. It also helps to explain how commercials and sales pitches work - if someone wants to sell you something and they can absorb all of your attention through entertainment, there's not enough room left for your skeptical facilities to operate. So you buy, and only later on does your critical/analytical component get back "on stage" within your conscious mind - "gee, I wonder if that was really worth the money?" (But then the ego-rationalization "actor" appears, saying "of course it was worth it, we don't make mistakes, it's gonna be great").

Another important concept is "mental contexts". Dr. Baars gives a much better explanation than I can, but in a nutshell, mental contexts are sub-conscious tendencies or "primers" that shape one's interpretations of sensory inputs. They basically help you decide just what it is that you are seeing or hearing or smelling or feeling or reading. They are changeable -- think about how you interpret the word "flies" in the lines "time flies like an arrow" and "fruit flies like a banana". Time and fruit change the contexts here. Contexts can be applied on a higher level too, and help to explain how great intellectual discoveries come about. E.g., Einstein managed to derive and apply a unique context regarding what was widely known about space, time, motion and gravity. As a result, relativity was born.

This book and its like do not close the "explanatory gap" regarding the nature of consciousness. That will require a major, high-level "context shift" akin to what Einstein did with physics. But Dr. Baars does provide a good summary of what will certainly need to be accounted for if and when that context-shift does arise. In the mean time, I feel obliged to return Dr. Baar's gratitude for reading his book. Thank you, Dr. Baars, for writing a very good summary of what cognitive psychology offers to the field of consciousness studies. Your book clearly does help the non-specialist to understand what cognitive researchers are up to, and indeed to help the layman better understand her or his own conscious mind. Your book was very much worth the money and time that I invested into it.

Seminal work.
By Carlos Camara
I think it is fair to say that Baar's global workspace model is the most influential cognitive model of consciousness out there. The theoretical work is simply outstanding. Few would today contest the main idea behind the model -that the function of consciousness is to broadcast information to separate functional modules all arround the brain-. Some recent papers by Baars, available on line, summarize all the emirical evidence that has appeared the last decade in favour of the model. Baars is currently at the neurosciences institute, headed by Gerald Edelman, and it is no surprise his latest views seem to include reentrant connectivity and Edelman and Tononis concept of complexity. However, although this is clearly a step forward, it is far from being a THE answer consciousness studies is looking for. Baars himself sees a gap between the cognitive model and the neurophysiological machanisms involved. He has presented the ERTAS model, but it is not clear how it has stood to recent neuroscience. I'm not saying i'ts been falsified, but it has been deprived of supremacy. However, the global workspace is still a brilliant contribution to the study of consciousness. Some philosophical nuances are still roaming, however. There is no qualia in the theather, and it is not clear how the audience could be conscious..how would they enjoy the show?.

Overreach: Delusions of Regime Change in Iraq, by Michael MacDonald

In the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, a fair number of Americans thought the idea was crazy. Now everyone, except a few die-hards, thinks it was. So what was going through the minds of the talented and experienced men and women who planned and initiated the war? What were their assumptions? Overreach aims to recover those presuppositions.

Michael MacDonald examines the standard hypotheses for the decision to attack, showing them to be either wrong or of secondary importance: the personality of President George W. Bush, including his relationship with his father; Republican electoral considerations; the oil lobby; the Israeli lobby. He also undermines the argument that the war failed because of the Bush administration’s incompetence.

The more fundamental reasons for the Iraq War and its failure, MacDonald argues, are located in basic axioms of American foreign policy, which equate America’s ideals with its interests (distorting both in the process) and project those ideals as universally applicable. Believing that democratic principles would bring order to Iraq naturally and spontaneously, regardless of the region’s history and culture or what Iraqis themselves wanted, neoconservative thinkers, with support from many on the left, advocated breaking the back of state power under Saddam Hussein. They maintained that by bringing about radical regime change, the United States was promoting liberalism, capitalism, and democracy in Iraq. But what it did instead was unleash chaos.

Review
In Overreach, MacDonald methodically dissects the top ten reasons most often used to explain why the war was a failure, and in the process shows each to be self-serving, inadequate, misleading―or all of the above. He does the same for explanations of why we went to war in the first place. (Scott Beauchamp Bookforum 2014-09-01)

MacDonald demonstrates vigorously and with intellectual clarity why the tenets of American exceptionalism do not usually translate to other areas of the world, with Iraq being just one example. A useful analysis of failed American military initiatives that could inform future debates about interventions in traditionally despotic nations that are also split among historically hostile religious factions. (Kirkus Reviews 2014-08-15)

With gloomily apt timing, as U.S. bombs drop once again on a now deeply fractured Iraq, international relations specialist MacDonald analyzes the usual explanations for why the Bush administration launched its invasion of Iraq in 2003 and finds them lacking. MacDonald argues that, beyond oil, the Israeli lobby, or Bush family history, the Iraq War and its horrific outcomes owe their existence to a more general trait in U.S. foreign policy, namely, a tendency to equate the country’s values with its interests. (Publishers Weekly 2014-09-08)

Overreach is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how and why the project of ‘regime change’ in Iraq not only failed, but was incoherent from the outset. With his characteristic political acumen, meticulous research practices, and marvelously lucid prose, MacDonald reveals the tragic political (not cultural!) blindness suffered by American architects of that project. This is a gripping, sad, and immensely important story. (Wendy Brown, University of California, Berkeley)

It is easy to forget how many supported the Iraq War in 2002 and 2003. For anyone who wants to remember what happened―and what went wrong―this is an absorbing read. We misunderstood Iraq and the war, MacDonald shows, because we misunderstood ourselves―profoundly and tragically. (Russell Muirhead, Dartmouth College)

Excellent…MacDonald is profoundly and chillingly right in his diagnosis of the mentality that ultimately set this disastrous chain of events in motion. (James B. Rule Dissent 2015-05-06)

I also came across this excellent book on foreign policy
By WillyBill
I also came across this excellent book on foreign policy: Michael MacDonald, Overreach: Delusions of Regime Change in Iraq (Harvard, 2014). It is very analytical, about as far from an airport book or twitter as you can imagine, but as good on American Enlightenment delusions as anything I have read. It argues that (for the most part) foreign policy realists and foreign policy idealists opposed the 2nd Gulf War, and he doesn’t spend much time on them. He concentrates on elites, mainly Liberal Hawks, Neoconservatives, and Neoliberals. One depressing conclusion that his analysis leads to is that it would do no good for the elites to read this book because the nature of age-old American values and ideals has shaped an American world view that says American ideas and values (which are God-given and self-evident, according to Jefferson) coincide with American power and are universal, so that attacks on Iraq (or Syria and Iran) are good for the world and for the Iraqis, Syrians, Iranians. It might take a few more wars, the elites believe, but someday the world will be just like us.

This book shows you how to build your own custom engine from scratch using AST3D, a powerful 3D graphics library that's included on the disk. Now you can build the game you want, and you'll never have to pay a licensing fee again.

This book/disk set, written by professional game programmer Brian Hook, gives all the technical details, shortcuts, and tricks of the trade he had to learn the hard way. Find out how to:

  • Design and develop games like the professionals
  • Create real-time 3D graphics games
  • Implement collision and boundary detection
  • Create "intelligent" entities using AI algorithms

Disk includes:

  • AST3D, a C++ library specifically designed for 3D game programming
  • Source code for Borland and Watcom C++ compilers
  • An original 3D game engine you can use to create your own games

It is a good book
By Rustam Abzaletdinov
I purchased this book in 1995 when I was migrating from C to C++. Stepped through the code in the debugger, and put it aside, as it was for DOS, and I wanted to have a real Window, not DOS screen. Later, with Charles Petzold's "Programming Windows" help, I ported 3D engine DOS code to Windows31 and it worked, but I have to adapt it to the Windows events/kbd/mouse processing. Now in 6 years I recompiled the Windows 31 version on Windows 2000 Advanced Server in VS.NET Beta1 - it compiles and runs(!). I am learning C# these days, and will try to re-write Brian's engine in C#. My point is that the ideas of 3D engine experssed in this book are fundamental, as they are absorbed from the knowledge of many talented people named in the book. The bulk of engine design and the code is solid, it just takes time and patience to gain necessary experience to understand the engine, adopt it to the event-driven model, and move it to the platform of your choice. Overall book is worth the money spent for those who want to learn the core of 3D programming.

Great but don't expect to create unreal engine..
By Martin Nielsen
I bought this book many years ago because a friend of mine was going to buy it and asked if he should order one for me too. Yeah sure, why not. At that point even 2D game programming was a challenge for me, so I never read the book.

Now about 5 years later, and after reading "3D Math Primer for graphics and game Development", I wanted to apply some of my new knowledge, to show a simple filled cube on screen.

I started reading the book. Brian Hook at the time had a 486 and the OS was dos. The book does not explain OpenGL or Direct3D. It is completely software 3D. I like this fact. I don't expect to use the result for anyting other than knowledge. I want to know how 3D works under the hood, before I try OpenGL or Direct3D.

The examples are very easy to follow. I have now achieved to show a spinning cube on the screen which was my goal and I'm looking forward to read on and apply texture mapping.

Conclusion:

Great book if you know matrices and vectors but have no clue about how to apply it to programming.

Great if you only expect the book to help you with the first few steps into 3D programming. Don't expect to create Unreal engine or something like that.

I give it 3 stars. Maybe it deserves more but still, it IS dated and I'm taking this into consideration as well.

Not too bad...
By David L. Sharp
I don't know why some of these other losers are so upset that the book didn't show them how to write a game. If they'd bothered to read the title, they'd know that it never claimed it would do that. Instead it claims that it will teach them to build a 3d Gaming ENGINE!!! An Engine, NOT A GAME!!!
When viewed from the perspective of teaching you how to build an ENGINE, it succeeds quite well. I liked the fact that he explained why he used some features of the C++ language but not others. His explanation of fixed point arithmetic in particular was enlightening, as some of the implications of its use aren't immediately apparent.
All in all, I thought it was an informative book.

VERY HELPFUL!!
By raincrowfarm
This is a gem of a book that I refer to often for positioning of those rarely done or difficult to position exams. This book is nearly complete from head to toe in MRI positioning and is easy to read with great photos showing slice selections. It includes pituitary, orbits, cranial nerves, TMJ's, brachial plexus, elbow/FABS view, pancreas, fetal, pelvic arteries, femur/quads/hamstring, foot and other more and less common exams. Each chapter begins with an anatomy drawing with labels to the important/obscure parts. Every section in the chapter clearly states what the different series demonstrate in the anatomy which I find very helpful when a patients diagnosis is already known and certain sequences can provide greater detail for the radiologist. Using this reference has helped build my confidence and made me look really smart to my peers too. Thanks Anne Bright!

Review

“Anne McWhir’s edition of The Last Man is first rate! Mary Shelley’s novel is well served by a careful editor who provides an informed introduction, comprehensive annotations, and well-chosen appendices that contextualize this richly complex novel―Shelley herself would have been pleased!” ― Charles E. Robinson, University of Delaware

'All The World Has The Plague!'
By mp
Mary Shelley's novel, 'The Last Man' is a work which is slowly gaining the critical attention it richly deserves. Fans of 'Frankenstein' will be astounded at how much deeper Mary Shelley's indictment of 'masculine' visionary Romanticism, technology, and the faults of humanity go in 'The Last Man'. At the same time, the novel is fraught with problems and contradictions which give an already paranoid work a whirling sense of internal dementia.
The action of 'The Last Man' takes place between 2073 and 2100 AD. England is ripe for change as the last King of England abdicates his throne in response to public outcry for a more democratic form of government. Lionel Verney, a shepherd, is drawn out of a life of wildness and crime by Adrian, the former crown prince of England. The charismatic Lord Raymond enters the story as the lover of Lionel's sister, Perdita, and the newly-elected Lord Protector of England. Torn between his love of power and his affections for his wife and a persistent attachment to Evadne, a Greek woman, Raymond renounces his political position and flees to Greece. There, he leads a military campaign to establish Greek independence and bring about the end of the Turkish empire.
Then, the Plague takes over. The nondescript malady has wiped out the population of Constantinople just as Raymond conquers it, making his victory meaningless. Word of the plague's virulence comes in from Asia and America, and from the southern, eastern, and western corners of the world, the plague begins to encroach inward towards Europe and England. The remainder of the novel tracks Lionel and Adrian's attempts to save the human race from utter annihilation.
In 'The Last Man', Mary Shelley gives us a horrifying, desolate prophecy of the future, when religion, technology, and human effort are all exposed as meaningless. Although many might say that she also abandons the redemptive possibilities of art, I think that art provides the novel's only hope. Mary Shelley's dependence on art of every format is clear in the novel's influences - She has Lionel refer to literature, including the works of Daniel Defoe, Charles Brockden Brown, Ann Radcliffe, Homer, Shakespeare, and Jonathan Swift among others.
The novel is fraught with problems of gender and power relations. At any moment of emotional weakness, Lionel calls himself 'girlish' or 'womanly,' and the novel seems to privilege women who are selfless and submissive. On the other hand, as Morton Paley's introduction points out, the plague itself is consistently described as female, at one place referred to as 'The Queen of the World'. With regard to power relations, Lionel continually mentions that in the dying world of humanity, social distinctions have all been abandoned - and yet there are still references to his 'servant' or those of other people. The most problematic scene in the novel revolves around racial distinctions when Lionel encounters a dying black man in London.
There are a million things to talk about in 'The Last Man,' and a novel so rich for discussion deserves to be read by as many people as possible. This is a book I warmly recommend, so pick it up and discover that there is more to Mary Shelley than 'Frankenstein'.

The Beginning of the End
By Greg Hughes
In "The Last Man" (1826) Mary Shelley conceived a plot device that would eventually be used by a string of writers: an apocalyptic plague that virtually wipes out the human race. From "The Last Man" would come books like "The Scarlet Plague" (1912), "Earth Abides (1949) and "The Stand" (1978), each work taking something from its predecessor, each work written in a separate, distinctive era. The passage of time would allow writers to be more graphic in terms of aftermath, as readers became more sophisticated and less disturbed by what earlier generations would consider "horrifying".
"The Last Man" takes place in the late 21st century: a future without telephones, cars, television or computers. In fact life in the 2090s is not that different to the 1820s, apart from a few political changes (Britain is now a republic). Readers who criticized "Earth Abides" for being dated would have even more to complain about here. Shelley could not possibly have guessed the advances, social and technological, that would take place since 1824. Therefore it's helpful for the modern reader to pretend the story is happening in an alternate 21st century, along the lines of "Pavane".
The narrator Lionel Verney spends the first third of the book describing his early life, telling us how an altruistic young man of noble stock (Adrian) took him under his wing, effectively saving him from a life of penury. Lionel and his younger sister now mix in the highest circles, the cultured world of art, literature and music (things which the working class had nothing to do with in the 1820s).
Mary Shelley's prose is formal to say the least. Containing echoes of Byron and Wordsworth, it is rich, stylish and philosophical. It is not until Part two of the novel that the plague makes its appearance. When Shelley describes the plague there is mention of bodies lying in the open and the breakdown of order, but she doesn't treat it with the kind of brutal frankness that Stephen King does in "The Stand". It does look as if King was influenced by Shelley however. Here is a quote from "The Last Man":
"The ward was filled with an effuvia that caused my heart to heave with painful qualms. The dead were carried out, and the sick brought in, with like indifference; some were screaming with pain, others laughing from the influence of more terrible delerium; some were attended by weeping, despairing relations, others called aloud with thrilling tenderness or reproach on the friends who had deserted them while the nurses went from bed to bed incarnate images of despair, neglect and death."
Here is a quote from "The Stand" one and a half centuries later:
"Wards were crammed. Patients lay on the floors. The halls were full; nurses, many of them obviously sick themselves, wove in and out, some of them weeping hysterically. Others looked shocked to the point of coma." King also adds little details like the smell of waste and the cries of the damned. While Shelley is poetic, King is direct and to the point. He was writing for an audience whose attention span has been diminished by things like television and films laden with special effects. The impatient 21st century reader may therefore find "The Last Man" more of a challenge.
Although Shelley's plague is more gradual than those of other writers, society is still crumbling. Even though extinction is in the air, the main characters still perform acts of heroism. The character Adrian has all the makings of a saint. It's just unfortunate that there will be no one left alive to canonize him. Although "The Last Man" is dated, it did pave the way for a genre that still fascinates and terrifies readers today. Mary Shelley is owed a great debt in terms of apocalyptic literature.

"The Last Man," the best of Mary Shelley's "other" works
By Lawrance Bernabo
Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley published "The Last Man" in 1826, eight years after her classic "Frankenstein" and four years after her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley died. Of all of her other novels, "The Last Man" is clearly the one that is of more than passing interest. In her Journal in May of 1824 Shelley wrote: "The last man! Yes, I may well describe that solitary being's feelings, feeling myself as the last relic of a beloved race, my companions extinct before me." The result was one of the first novels to tell a story in which the human race is destroyed by pestilence, which we have seen in novels from Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" and Stephen King's "The Stand," and films such as the recent "28 Days Later..." However, "The Last Man" is also an early example of a dystopian novel set in the 21st century when England is a republic being governed by a ruling elite. Adrian, Earl of Windsor (and a representation of Shelley's late husband) introduces the narrator of the tale, Lionel Verney, who is the required outsider to describe and comment upon the world of the future.
Shelley's vision of the future is essentially a reaction against Romanticism and the failure of the movement to solve the problems of the world with art and imagination. This would stand in contrast to earlier English utopian works such as Francis Bacon's "The New Atlantis," which reflected the Age of Reason's belief that science would solve any and all problems. Shelley begins the story as a romance, with Lord Raymond (presumed to be modeled on Lord Byron) winning the hand of the lovely Perdita and being elected Protector. In contrast to the dire predictions of Thomas Malthus regarding unchecked population growth resulting in mass starvation, an ideal world seems to have been created. But then the plague breaks out in Constantinople and starts spreading. This plague is grounded more in fantasy than science, with Shelley clearly relying more on Boccaccio and Defoe, for her pandemic, which is not contagious (an interesting plot choice to be sure).
The point of the plague is that it allows Shelley to show the best and the worst of human nature. When the demagogue Ryland abdicates being Lord Protector, the altruistic Adrian takes his place and makes an appeal for brotherhood, even as anarchy runs rampant in the streets and eventually the main characters are forced to flee England, which has strong parallels to the expulsion from Eden. This sets up the idea at the end of the novel that the last survivors might be able to establish an earthly paradise and rebuild the human race after the plague has disappeared. I was rather surprised that Shelley kills off her female characters because I had expectations that this would be more of a feminist work. Of course, this is because I remember who her mother was, but "The Last Man" is clearly concerned more with her late husband.
"The Last Man" was probably Mary Shelley's least successful work during her lifetime, but today, which the interest in science fiction, as well as the real world threats of biological warfare and other weapons of mass destruction, this idea of how the world ends is quite pertinent. This is clearly her most important work after "Frankenstein," although obviously we are talking about a significant gap.
