About the Author

Fr. Devin Roza, LC is visiting professor of New Testament at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. He has a licentiate degree in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute and a licentiate in philosophy from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum.

Scott Hahn is Professor of Theology and Scripture at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, in Steubenville, Ohio. He also holds the Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He is author of The Lamb's Supper, Lord Have Mercy; Swear to God: The Promise and Power of Sacraments; and Letter and Spirit: From Written Text of Living Word in the Liturgy.

Amazing reference book on typology and the sacraments that belongs in your Bible Study library

Fulfilled in Christ is arranged like a compact encyclopedia on the sacraments. Because of this presentation, there is a brief guide on how to use this book before reading it. Each sacrament receives its own section, and each section contains types and symbols. Each type/symbol contains introductory material composed of Scriptural references, Catechism references, and cross-references to other types/symbols within the book. After the introductory material for each type/symbol are summaries of all the references to the specific type/symbol. For an example, both the sacrifice of Christ and the Eucharist were prefigured by animal sacrifices, We then are treated to numerous Scriptural references of animal sacrifices, both sufficient ones and insufficient ones. At the end of the book are appendices which contain readings from the Liturgy for each sacrament and a list of readings from the Liturgy of the Hours that the author, Dr. Devin Roza used in this book.

It's hard to say one has a favorite section in a book of this nature, but the Introduction in this book was very enlightening. For starters, it covered how many different Church Fathers made use of typology with their study and interpretation of types and symbols in the Bible. Dr. Roza also discusses the unity of the Old and New Testament and how God's plan was fulfilled in Jesus. And like any good scholar, he finally presents the other side of the argument, and explains why typology has fallen out of grace and how one must not accept all typology as good typology. His chief example is St. Cyprian of Carthage suggesting that Noah getting drunk on wine prefigured the Eucharist. That's absurd to even think about, and proof that even saints aren't perfect.

When I received this book, I thought I was getting a scholarly tome that broke down each sacrament in essay form or chapter form. The book is scholarly, but it does not read like an essay or typical book. It is instead more systematic and reads like a reference book, where if you had a specific type or symbol you wanted to know more about, you would flip to that specific section and read the notes and reference the specific Scripture and Catechism passages. This is not a bad thing. It is just not what I was expecting. If you want to have a comprehensive guide to Sacramental typology this book is first class. If you want to understand Scripture better, are a seminarian, or studying theology, then this book belongs on your reference shelf. It has earned a coveted place on my Bible study desk alongside some Bible dictionaries, concordances, and atlases, and is a volume I will reference for years to come.

Wonderful reference that found a prominent place in my library. I look forward to using it to develop lessons. Note: This is not a book to read, but it is an awesome guide to typology in the Bible. Anyone serious enough to study scripture should have this tool at their disposal.

About the Author
Barrie Houlihan is Professor of Sport Policy in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, and Visiting Professor at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. His research interests include the domestic and international policy processes for sport.

He has authored or edited twenty books and over fifty journal articles. His most recent books include Managing Elite Sport Systems (edited with Svein Andersen and Lars Tore Ronglan, Routledge 2015), Sport Policy in Britain (with Iain Lindsey, Routledge 2012) and a third edition of Sport and Society (edited with Dominic Malcolm, SAGE 2015).

Barrie has undertaken consultancy projects for various UK government departments, UK Sport, UNESCO, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the European Union. He is the editor in chief of the International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics.

If you are striving to gain a sound fundamental understanding on relevant compensation analyses or if you are laboring with performing comprehensive analyses to uncover pay inequities amongst your company employees... I believe that you will find this book to be instrumental, with a hands-on, insightful focus on the statistical methods that will enlighten even the most tenured compensation practitioners.

I am a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), and Compensation Manager for a publicly-traded Fortune 500 company; I have found this book to be an all-inclusive, highly useful desk reference for today's compensation practitioner. It certainly has been extremely valuable in helping me to contribute in successful strategic business decisions.
This book provides easy to follow instructions for statistical techniques and knowledge to anyone seeking to execute as a bona fide "Analyst". The content of this reference aid provides today's compensation analysts and other analytical professionals, the "how to" source in producing relevant analytical information and to play an active role for better strategic decision-making. Analyses that answer questions such as, "What is our market position?", "What should our salary increase budget be the next three years?" etc., are given in this text with step-by-step detailed approaches.

Excellent Resource for Compensation Statistics

As someone that deals with compensation on a monthly basis, though not an HR compensation professional I have found this to be an excellent resource. This appears to be a college textbook and as such is not out of line for price, also it is targeted to a narrow audience which would also increase the price. But it is expensive, though cheaper than college courses if one is able to self-learn and the knowledge contained in the book is sufficient for what one needs to accomplish.

The statistics are basic for the college level but I think it is valuable to see the methods applied to a specific topic such as this with targeted examples, and valuable to someone that may not have had much exposure to statistics or really grasped the subject very well.

Though I use some of the statistics and aggregations on a monthly basis in creating what I am asked to, there have been some "wow" moments in the book for me. Although I have knowledge of the statistics, when one is in the "grind" we don't always stop and think what else could be done to add value and knowledge. One such bit of knowledge was applying future value to a retention bonus. No one in the organization had thought to see if it was feasable to set aside a sum of money at present value to generate the remainder of the retention bonus via intrest at its due date. While money is in interst bearing vehicles, none is in accounts with this specificity.

Thanks to the authors section on models I am now beginning to frame some up.

The statistical teaching is solid, the methodology seems solid, and as a textbook there are chapter questions and answers.

There is an Excel file of the datasets at the publishers website so one can work the examples in the book, the workbook also includes an index for each dataset listing dataset number, chapter, item (page number, category selection, examples, etc.), and any tables they are used in.

I feel this book is good for a student, a practicing professional that deals with compensation, and good for those just wanting to learn about the subject and even for basic stats (I think the examples tied to a real world problem are valuable for those learning stats in a non-formal environment).

For me it has helped to break out of the methods I inherited (this is the way we do it), apply some things I knew but hadn't thought to apply, and add value for my employer.

Learn about statistics, tables, graphs, and charts as they apply to setting salaries at your company.

An interesting book. It comes across as a college textbook of sorts. And it is hard to love a college textbook. Thus I cannot rate the book higher than a four for starters. I was an accounting major in college, and I had to take Statistics 201 and 202 as a sophomore in order to graduate. As I read this book I recognized just about everything mentioned regarding the statistics discussed. Of course, I earned 6 credits spread over two semesters in statistics, and this book looks like it would be worth no more than 2 college credits if a course were built around it.

I have a little bit of an issue with the outline of the book. It seems to me that chapters 3-10 plus 17 should be grouped together as a Part I, and chapters 11-16 should be grouped together as a Part II. That way the basics of statistics are grouped together and then the applications of statistics to compensation analysis are grouped together. The material covered between pages 319 and 355 probably should be grouped as Appendix A (Miscellaneous Topics), the Glossary should be made Appendix B, and the Answers called Appendix C. Poor organization of a college textbook lowers the rating by yet another star.

This book is all about explaining to the reader the need and the how to of converting raw compensation data into information that can be analyzed and used in decision making processes. You'll need to become expert at summarizing data with tables, graphs, and charts. And you'll need to be able to use statistical formulas on the data often times in order to make meaningful sense of it. This book explains this quite well.

I guess my main question after reading the book is whether a compensation expert should simply take the two classes I took in college and then apply that material to the world of setting compensation levels for companies. Or should they read the instant book where statistics is certainly covered, but the coverage is definitely watered down? The price of the book is in keeping with college textbooks, but it is not too bad. It might be a good idea to get the book as an overview of what to consider when analyzing compensation for a job. And if you want more coverage of statistics, then take the college classes I took. 3 stars!

An optimal reader for intermediate-advanced learners

These kinds of readers are very helpful for people on the AP track, as well as any Latin student, I imagine. As an advanced self-learner, these are really the staple of my Latin diet.

A quick suggestion for advanced learners, though: if you are learning on your own, you may go through a transitional phase where you reference the notes as you read in whatever you're reading for the first time. Train yourself not to do this. Go over a sentence or two a few times and try to decipher it yourself, THEN turn to vocabulary, THEN the grammar portion of the notes if you are unsure.

The reason I bring this up is that readers such as this have the notes on the same page, and, while this is quite convenient, you need to stop using these as training wheels and use them like a helpful assistant teacher as a secondary resort. I would actually prefer the format employed in the Stephen Ciraolo edition of the Pro Caelio at my stage, but hey, if you can't exert enough discipline to avoid looking at facing notes while you read, what can you do? ;)

A great resource for studying Cicero's Latin

Steven Cerutti has written a highly accessible and practical student edition of Cicero's Pro Archia. The page layout is great - Latin on the right page, grammatical and syntactical notes on the bottom and vocabulary on the left (facing) page. The notes were always very helpful in aiding the navigation of complex Ciceronian periods and included numerous comments on Cicero's use of rhetorical artifices. The typeface is eminently readable and the book provides some good basic information on the life of Cicero and Archias.

This is a great volume for anyone desiring an intermediate text with helpful notes in an attractive and well-laid-out presentation.

Great for Supporting the Move to Real Latin

This book provides ample supplementary notes as well as specific vocabulary to help the reader get through the book without getting frustrated. Supplementary notes provide resources for further information if one so desires. This would be a great reader for both advanced high school Latin classes and intermediate college classes.
