Great starting point for the funk!

I have never played funk music before - thanks to this book, now I have a clue and I'm having fun playing along with the tracks on the CD of this outstanding method. The exercises are truly useful and build gradually your funk chops from the scratch (no pun intended).

The book is much easier if you already know about dominant chords, but it does not require advanced playing.

Verry fun and instructive! A great book!

Let The Funk Begin

If you've never played Funk guitar, you will when you're done with this book! I have to disagree when anyone that says this book is not for beginners. The chords and rhythm grooves on the CD are exactly what beginners need to stay interested in chords, chord progressions and structure. It will also please the ears of parents and other nearby listeners. There is more to the fretboard than shredding you know. Once you start getting the basics of this book underway, I strongly suggest listening to some James Brown, Tower of Power, Funkadelic (the sixties stuff), Rick James, Prince (the beginnings) and The Meters (Cissy Strut).
There is some very good stuff in this book!

this is a nice book, it starts with some basic (but useful) 16ths exercises then moves on to some very cool grooves, the CD tracks although basic do sound professional, something I appreciated ... you'd think the grooves here are easy but they are not, they are simple but not easy at all if you want to play them like Mr. Bolton does on the CD (he plays pretty much on top of the beat & he has great timing) ... most funk tricks you hear are explained here, scratching, skanks, slides, muting, funky shuffle feels ... I would have liked more exercises to develop the other rhythmic figures in this book but overall it's very good

Preface

Education in the science of RF and microwave engineering consists of guiding the reader along a gradient of known data, with the highest attention to the basic concepts that form the foundation of this field of study. The basic concepts presented in this book are far more fundamental than the mother sciences of engineering (i.e., physics and mathematics) and cover the essential truth about our physical universe in which we live. These basic truths convey a much deeper understanding about the nature of the physical universe than has ever been discussed in any RF and microwave, or for that matter any scientific textbook.

These basic truths set up a background of discovered knowledge by mankind, against which a smaller sphere of information (i.e., RF and microwave engineering) can be examined. Many of the principles that appear in microwave books are easily describable and thus understood much better once the basic underlying concepts are grasped.

While studying sciences and engineering at the university, the author always looked for simplicity, a higher truth, and a deeper level of understanding in all of the rigorous mathematics and many of the physical laws that were presented. Upon further investigation, the underlying principles that form the backbone of all extant physical sciences have finally emerged and are presented as the fundamentals of physical sciences in Chapter 1 of this work.

A summary of philosophical formation of this work is presented in the form of a pyramid in Chapter 1. From this pyramid, we can see that workable knowledge is like a pyramid, where from a handful of common denominators efficiently expressed by a series of basic postulates, axioms, and natural laws, which form the foundation of a science, an almost innumerable number of devices, circuits, and systems can be thought up and developed. The plethora of the mass of devices, circuits, and systems generated is known as the application mass, which practically approaches infinity in sheer number. This is an important point to grasp, because the foundation portion never changes (a static) while the base area of the pyramid is an ever-changing and evolving arena (a kinetic) where this evolution is in terms of new implementation techniques and technologies.

Following this brief introduction, the fundamental laws and basic principles of electrical engineering, which most advanced textbooks take for granted, are discussed. The reason for their presentation at this early stage, is that in dealing with the subject of RF and microwave engineering, it has been found that a lack of deeper understanding of these fundamentals leads to a shallow perspective and a lack of appreciation of electrical engineering basics, which will eventually lead to serious miscomprehension and misapplication of the subject.

This book is written with emphasis on fundamentals and for this reason all new technical terms are thoroughly defined in the body of the text as they are introduced. This novel approach is based upon the results obtained in recent investigations and research in the field of education, which has shown that the lack of (or the slightest uncertainty on) the definition of terms poses as one of the most formidable obstacles in the reader's mind in achieving full comprehension of the material. A series of uncomprehended or misunderstood technical terms will block one's road to total comprehension and mastery of the subject. This undesirable condition will eventually lead to a dislike and total abandonment of the subject.

The initial motivation was to bring the basics to the forefront and orient the reader in such a way that he or she can think with these fundamentals correctly. This eventually led to writing the first manuscript several years ago and then the final preparation of this book at present.

In preparing this book, the emphasis was shifted from rigorous and sophisticated mathematical solutions of Maxwell's equations and instead has been aptly placed on RF and microwave circuit analysis and design principles using simple concepts while emphasizing the basics all the way.

This book is intended to be used in a 2-semester course in microwave electronics engineering for senior-level or graduate students and should serve as an excellent reference guide for the practicing RF and microwave engineer in the field as well.

The current work starts from very general postulates, considerations and laws and, chapter by chapter, narrows the focus to very specific concepts and applications, culminating in the design of various RF and microwave circuits. The book, divided into five parts and 21 chapters, develops and presents these chapters with the progressive development of concepts following the same pattern as presented in the pyramid of knowledge in Chapter 1, which is:

Part I   The Highest Fundamentals

Chapters 1- 4 form the foundation of electronics.

Part II   Wave Propagation in Networks

Chapters 5-8 present the basics of RF and Microwave science, wave propagation, and network characterization concepts.

Part III   Passive Circuit Design

Chapters 9-11 deal with the Smith Chart and its numerous applications to matching circuits.

Part IV   Basic Considerations in Active Networks

Chapters 12-14 discuss the basic considerations of circuit design.

Part V   Active Networks: Linear and Nonlinear Design

Chapters 15-21 provide detailed analysis and design methodologies of linear and nonlinear active circuits.

A list of symbols used in each chapter and a series of problems are included at the end of each chapter to help the reader gain a fuller understanding of the presented materials. The book ends with a glossary of technical terms and several important appendixes. These appendixes cover physical constants and other important data needed in the analysis or design process, with one appendix fully devoted to several design examples of practical active circuits using computer-aided design techniques based on the "Libra/touchstone" ? software Ver. 6.1 from HPEEsof.

Right to the point

I have an undegradute degree in engineering, and needed a book for research in area of microwave frequency amplifier design. I have looked through a number of books in this subject area and found Dr.Radmanesh's book the best and right to the point. It refreshed my knowledge of fundamentals of elecronic circuitry and gave indepth explanations for practically all major aspects of the RF amplifier design. It provides excellent examples and detailed diagrams for various amplifier design configurations. It is well illustrated and organized. I think it is the best book for the use in undegradute/gradute course in this subject area as well as an excellent practical reference for the microwave frequency amplifier design.

One of the best books on RF and microwave active circuits, especially transmission lines, low noise amplifiers, power amplifiers, oscillators, detectors, mixers, control circuits and MMIC design . The author lucidly presents the basics of RF & Microwaves and the low frequency electronics as well as essential materials on high frequency electronics particularly applications of the Smith Chart in circuit design, S-parameters, and wave propagation in transmission lines. His illustrated presentations on the design of active circuits using lumped and distributed elements using the concepts of stability circles, gain circles and noise circles are some of the most fascinating aspects of this book. A must-have and should-read book for any microwave electronic student, or practicing field engineer working in testing and measurement or high frequency electronic circuit design!

Excellent Overview of Sustainable Engineering

This textbook is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in sustainable engineering or the evolving field of industrial ecology. The book is catered to an upper undergraduate or beginning graduate engineering student, and offers a real overview of the multiple topics involved in sustainable engineering. Generally, each chapter is no longer than 20 pages (but there are over 20+ chapters), which allows the authors to cover multiple topics of sustainable engineering in a concise, yet still detailed manner. Each chapter offers an excellent list of suggested readings from which the authors pulled their information from, and all the graphs and tables are easy to understand and follow. Additionally, the chapters are to the point (as previously mentioned), and allow the reader to gain a wide range of knowledge concerning these exciting fields, without the information becoming too overwhelming. Highly recommended!

Muggleton comes across as a very charming, articulate and kind young man who I am sure will give enormous comfort and helpful ideas to any young person on the spectrum. The book is, additionally, the ideal medium for educating parents who are struggling to understand what Aspergers is and how it effects their child or what they can do to help support their child. If you feel your child is giving up and lacks direction or faith in themselves, Muggleton might be the catalyst for change -- asteens Muggleton, in his debut, is particularly well-suited to comment on Asperger Syndrome, since he was diagnosed with it at the age of 15 and is studying to be a psychologist. In concise, logically arranged chapters, he provides a brief history of autistic spectrum disorders and then offers experience-based insight into a number of aspects of AS, including ritual behaviors, problems making friends and dealing with difficult social situations, increased sensitivity to sensory input, bullying, dealing with changes in a normal routine, etc... About the Author
Joshua Muggleton has Asperger Syndrome. Having gained experience as an assistant psychologist, he graduated with first class honours in Psychology from the University of St Andrews, and is currently studying for a Master of Research in Clinical Psychology at the University of Birmingham. Since 2005, Joshua has been leading talks, lectures and workshops on Autism Spectrum Disorders and related issues. He has spoken to MPs in the House of Commons, and has appeared on the BBC, Channel 4, and CNN. Outside of term time, Joshua lives in Guildford, UK, with his parents, sister, and also his two younger brothers, who are both on the autism spectrum.

Pleasant conversational style and enjoyable humor with a serious message

Subtitled How to help a child with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning Autism, Joshua Muggleton's personal tale humanizes a somewhat scary diagnosis and gives wise advice for supporting children with Aspergers, or even those who just have autistic tendencies. The author uses some well-chosen analogies to help adults relate to the feelings and concerns of children, looking beyond diagnosis to see how the world might appear, and how well-intentioned suggestions might increase frustration and suffering. A chapter on bullying, for example, might apply equally to any child who is different, and opens with the wise subtitle When being different isn't cool.

The author lives in England and some of his advice about the availability of assistance might not apply in the US, but the advisability of getting the assistance is the same. With a little effort to understand a child's motivation and concerns, parents, educators and other interested adults could play a major role in making the Martians of Joshua's title feel more welcome in their earth-bound homes. Maybe even some grown-up Martians might recognize their own motivations and clarify their fear of change, occasional obsessions, and rigid certainties through reading this book.

The author has a nice conversational style with a pleasing sense of humor, describing personal experiences without attributing blame, and offering the promise of success and hope to those who might see the world as simply filled with obstacles. Showing how low his illness took him, and knowing how far he's come, from dysfunctional teen to adroit college student and author, this book offers hope to readers with any connection to the autistic community, or to children who simply feel they don't belong.

The author is a psychology major at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, has spoken in many venues including the British House of Commons, and has appeared many times on TV. He combines up-to-date research with personal experience to provide hope and practical advice with a very personal touch, and I'd recommend this book to anyone wondering how to make sense of their confusing child, whether Martian, autistic or just passing through an awkward stage.

Helpful book

As a parent with two kids on the spectrum, this book was helpful. I can now picture what my kids may be like when they reach adolescents and early adulthood. The examples given were helpful, although much of the language regarding the UK school system was lost on me, and several of the examples and possible solutions were mute points for me because some of the options given in the book are not available to me in the states. Otherwise, I like the way it was written and will likely reread it several times in the coming years.
