A great novel and far above the movie

Forrest Gump is a superb novel, and it is unfortunate that most people are more familiar with the movie, and think of Forrest Gump mainly as a "movie character." This is very unfortunate, just as if "Tom Sawyer" or "Gulliver's Travels" were widely known as just "good movies" while the original books were confined to obscurity.

The movie was good, and deserving of the awards and accolades it received. However, it is not by any stretch a substitute for the book. Forrest Gump is a somewhat different character in the book than in the movie, and the Forrest Gump of the novel experiences numerous adventures that the movie does not even hint at. To do the book justice, perhaps it should have been adapted into four or five separate movies.

Then again, another way to do the book justice is to just read it.

About the Author

Mark Lutz is a leading Python trainer, the author of Python’s earliest and best-selling texts, and a pioneering figure in the Python world.

Mark is the author of the three O’Reilly books: Learning Python, Programming Python, and Python Pocket Reference, all currently in fourth or fifth editions. He has been using and promoting Python since 1992, started writing Python books in 1995, and began teaching Python classes in 1997. As of Spring 2013, Mark has instructed 260 Python training sessions, taught roughly 4,000 students in live classes, and written Python books that have sold 400,000 units and been translated to at least a dozen languages.

Together, his two decades of Python efforts have helped to establish it as one of the most widely used programming languages in the world today. In addition, Mark has been in the software field for 30 years. He holds BS and MS degrees in computer science from the University of Wisconsin where he explored implementations of the Prolog language, and over his career has worked as a professional software developer on compilers, programming tools, scripting applications, and assorted client/server systems.

Definitely not a "get started quick" guide

Wow. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it's enormous. It took me almost a year to go through the whole thing, although I did stop and work through every single example. On the other hand, like "Learning Python", there are a lot of sidetracks that seem targeted at beginners which I felt could have easily been left out.
This book should be considered volume 2 of "Learning Python". "Learning Python" (or "volume 1") covers the core Python language in quite a bit of detail, but doesn't talk much about the library. "Programming Python", in turn, covers the Python library, but doesn't talk about the syntax of the language (you're expected to know all that already).
Even with 1500 pages, it would be impossible to do justice to the _entire_ Python library, so a useful subset is covered. The book is actually divided into seven subsections, and sections 2 (System Programming), 3 (GUI Programming), 4 (Internet Programming), and 5 (Tools and techniques) could each have legitimately been a book in their own right. Part 6 (Integration) was a bit weak compared to the others - it covered only two chapters, and was the only section of the book that included incomplete examples. Of course, Parts 1 & 7 were an introduction and an epilogue.
In terms of the Python standard library, "String Services", "File and Directory Access", "Data Persistence", "Generic Operating System Services", "Interprocess Communcation and Networking", "Internet Protocols and Support", and "Graphical User Interfaces" were covered indepth. "Internet Data Handling" and "Structured Markup Tools" were both touched on, but not really examined. Other Python-related topics such as Jython, Zope, ZODB and SWIG were discussed as well, along with examples.
The main strength of this book was its examples. I prefer to manually type each source example and run them, rather than downloading them from a web site - although it takes longer to work through the book that way, I end up retaining quite a bit more. For that reason, I'm frustrated by programming books that include incomplete examples (or at least not enough that I can reasonably fill in the blanks). Fortunately, this wasn't such a book - until the very last chapter, all of the examples were complete, although quite a few of them build on previous examples (sometimes a bit pointlessly, such as his GUIMixin "framework"). Chapter 15, for example, is pretty much nothing but a listing of a complete, working e-mail GUI client - I was actually able to use this to check my own e-mail (POP only... but still!)
Section 3 on GUI programming is the best coverage on TKinter available anywhere. This section alone is worth the price of the book, if you're ever going to touch TKinter. He doesn't cover Tix, unfortunately, but I believe that every single TKinter widget is discussed and demonstrated in example code. PMW and wxPython are mentioned, but just as in, "they exist" - this books perspective on GUI programming is TKinter only. Still, that's plenty to fill up 5 chapters.
This _is_ a good, useful, book - I got a lot more out of this than I got out of "Learning Python", but it can be a bit meandering at times - for its volume, I expected it to cover a lot more ground, although what the author does decide to cover, he covers in exquisite detail, including historical perspectives, real-world "war stories" and workable examples.

A great resource for the python programmer.

The only thing I regret about buying this book is not getting the hardcover version - it's a huge, comprehensive book.

It's got the best section on GUI programming in python that I've seen so far, and all the examples given throughout the book are practical, useful thing - unlike a lot of other programming books that only give you proofs-of-concept.

If you're already comfortable with python, and are looking to solidify your knowledge of it to a great degree, this is the book for you.

Good enough I suppose

One thing I really wish O'Reilly would have made clear on the cover is the version of Python which was current at the time of publication. In this case, it's 2.4, so if you're looking for information on things like function decorators or the new generator abilities that 2.5 brought along, you're going to be as disappointed as I was.

Aside from the fact that some of the information is dated, it's still a good overview of practical solutions to realistic problems which can be solved in the language. It does tend to spend way too much time developing TkInter GUIs (which I do not personally care about one bit) and overusing the usual array of extremely unfunny Monty Python references (which I personally stopped caring about around 1984). If you cut out both of these things the book would probably require about half as much paper per copy, and it'd be a good deal more digestible to boot. There's also lots of Windows-specific silliness and the author continues to operate under the assumption that OS X does not exist (every mention of the Mac platform refers to information that hasn't been accurate for nearly 10 years at this point).

victory, not defeat?

The Gallipoli campaign was a storied failure for the Allies in World War 1. The overall impression from most histories of the entire war is that the Allied effort was inadequate. The Turks were fighting on their homeland, and had much easier logistics. While the immediate tactical reality was that the Turks held the high ground above the beaches.

What this book attempts is to suggest that victory was still possible. It goes over hitherto much neglected military intelligence available to the Allies. In essence, had some different decisions been made, the Anzacs could perhaps have pushed thru the Turkish defensive lines and taken the peninsula. Then, if success had been reinforced, the Allies could invested Istanbul and linked up with the Russians.

The book makes somewhat plausible arguments. But military intelligence is always faced with multiple and contradictory data. With hindsight, the Allies could have done better. Not sure if in real time, the book's suggestions were blindingly obvious.

About the Author

Bill Seiler is a professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he has taught since 1972. He was department chair for more than 20 years and now teaches and directs the introductory course full time. The Undergraduate Leadership Award was renamed the William J. Seiler Undergraduate Leadership Award to honor him and his leadership of the department. Other honors include Outstanding Educator of America, Outstanding University and College Teacher by the Nebraska Communication Association, Outstanding Young Alumni and Distinguished Alumni Awards from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, and 2002 Boss of the Year Award. Bill received the 2013 National Communication Association’s Basic Course Division’s “Distinguished Faculty” award and was named to the 2013 Central States Association’s “Hall of Fame,” and in 2015 he received the National Communication’s “Wallace A. Bacon Lifetime Teaching Excellence Award.”

Bill earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, a master of arts from Kansas State University, and a doctorate from Purdue University. He is an experienced educator, consultant, researcher, and author in the area of communication and has an adjunct appointment in the Education & Human Sciences College. He is an avid golfer, who plays every chance he gets, which — unfortunately for him — is never enough. He loves his Nebraska Huskers. Bill and his wife Kathi have two daughters, Dana and Dionne; two sons-in-law, Lee and Wade; two grandchildren, Grant and Will; and three step-grandchildren, Zach, Stephanie, and Taylor.

Melissa Beall is a professor in the Communication Studies Department and a member of the teacher education faculty at the University of Northern Iowa. Dr. Beall, a proud Husker fan, received all three of her degrees from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Her areas of expertise include listening, intercultural listening, intercultural communication, communication and technology, and communication theory. She teaches oral communication, listening, language and communication, public speaking, critical thinking, college teaching, communication and technology, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, and communication theory.

Dr. Beall currently serves as the chair of the UNI Graduate faculty. Her honors include Iowa Board of Regents Faculty Excellence recipient, 2012 Central States Communication Association Hall of Fame, International Listening Association’s Outstanding Listening Educator, Listening Hall of Fame, and numerous teaching awards. She has served on numerous editorial boards; presented more than 600 papers, programs, and workshops; is past president of the Iowa Communication Association and the Nebraska Speech Communication and Theatre Association; and is vice president of the World Communication Association, the Pacific and Asian Communication Association, and the International Association of Communication Sciences. She is an officer in her local AAUP chapter and is a past president of the Central States Communication Association and of the International Listening Association. She has also served as an officer in many divisions of the National Communication Association.

Joseph Mazer is an associate professor and associate chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University. At Clemson, he is Director of the Social Media Listening Center, an interdisciplinary research lab and teaching facility that provides a platform to listen, measure, and engage in more than 650 million sources of social media conversations. His research and teaching interests are in instructional communication, social media and interpersonal relationships, quantitative research methods, and the introductory communication course. Joe is listed among the top 1 percent of prolific scholars in the discipline of Communication Studies spanning 2007–2011, according to a study in Communication Education, a journal published by the National Communication Association. He has received international, regional, university-wide, and departmental recognition for outstanding teaching. Joe is a past recipient of the Outstanding New Teacher Award from the Central States Communication Association and the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from Clemson University’s Department of Communication Studies undergraduate student body.

Joe is an active member of the National Communication Association and Central States Communication Association, where he has held several leadership roles; serves on editorial boards for several journals; and is Consulting Editor for Forums for Communication Education and an Associate Editor for Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Joe received his Ph.D. in communication studies from Ohio University, a master’s degree in communication from Illinois State University, and a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Mansfield University. Joe resides in Clemson, South Carolina, with his wife, Chrissy, and their children, Claire and Owen. As of this writing, they are participating in Clemson University’s Faculty in Residence program and make their home in a first-year student residence hall on campus. Together, they enjoy spending time with students in their community and cheering for the Clemson Tigers!

Loved it!

Loved it! Rebecca Deel once again writes a novel that is both suspenseful and romantic, without resorting to using sex to hide gaps in the plot, or to blatantly increase the length of the book without furthering the storyline. This reader is no prude, but easily gets bored with books that cannot tell a story without half of it being in the bedroom or in the shower. I appreciate the clean romance and the well-crafted plot of this book. And yes, a real story line. But readers should be aware that even though this book stands well on it's own, there are references to earlier books in the series.

Best Book of the Series!

Best book of the series by far. LOVED the characters. In some ways I would consider it predictable, but it was interesting and enjoyable to read and kept me interested right to the end. I felt that Alex's mother, his brother and Ivy's mother acted together to make the me feel protective of this couple. This book is absolutely worth reading. I am partway into Fortress 1 book and it is also well written. I would recommend anything written by Rebecca Deel.

The only problem I have with her books is the poor editing. The one I remember from here was "en" was used instead of "an". There was a bad one in the prior book that also would have been caught with spell check. I don't know who she has editing her books, but they are doing her a disservice. I can't recall ever seeing as many errors in any other books. I caught a number of errors in this book, and many more errors in the prior book..and so on. I started paying attention early in the series, and now it just drives me bananas. She is a phenomenal writer, every bit as good as Nora Roberts and others in this field. She deserves better than books being published that have errors that even spell check would catch. I will randomly catch an error here or there in another book, but I've never seen so many errors in one book as I did in book 4 or any of these, really.

Loved This Book !!!

Wow ! Such a great story. Alex is a take charge, caring, and romantic elite member of the black ops group Durango. He will always protect , and defend His military family and his country. His estranged father is murdered in an act of revenge. Alex comes from a very dysfunctional family that has caused him great pain. Still, he steps up to protect them from a determined killer. His girlfriend Ivy is drawn into the danger. Their feelings slowly develop into love, while they support each other during all the chaos. The sexy and tenacious guys from Durango have their hands full, involved with several murder attempts, and their threatened women. Ivy had survived her own horror of physical and mental abuse that resulted in panic attacks. Alex loving care and patience helped Ivy to become the strong person she needs to be. This book has great flow, diverse and colorful characters, plus Lots of excitement.
