The Days of Dunkirk

David Divine (born Arthur Durham Divine) was a Royal Navy officer who actually participated in the events of the Dunkirk evacuation for the British Expeditionary Force from the continent in 1940. However, he was in this work written an excellent analysis and history of the circumstances and events that surrounded and made up this "game-changing" moment of the Second World War. Instead of having Britain on its knees and suing for peace, the successful evacuation made it possible for it to even consider continuing the war against Nazi Germany.
Devoting several chapters on the events leading up to the decision to withdraw British forces from Europe over the beaches and piers of Dunkirk, David Divine then devotes a single chapter each to each of the nine days of the actual evacuation. He then addresses the successes and failures of Germany, France, Belgium, and Britain in a chapter upon how each nation dealt with the circumstances leading up to and the evacuation and to the evacuation itself.
This is probably not the definitive book on Dunkirk, since Divine was writing in the years before the full story of British intelligence and code-breaking was made public. However, it is one of the earliest accounts of it drawing upon extensive historical records and accounts and presented as a history and not as a memoir or autobiography. The well-presented maps and the final chapters of analysis by the author, in addition to the well-told main story, do make it one of the important works for any serious study of the BEF's war in France in 1940 and it's rescue by the Royal Navy, French Navy, and Britain's 'small boats'.

Very important book and a must for a full understanding of WWII.

The Nine Days of Dunkirk
Every one knows, or should know, about the fantastic evacuation of the British Army from France in 1940. Defeated, out gunned, out maneuvered and with collapsing allies on each flan, the 10 division force that made up the British Expeditionary Force sent to strengthen France had its back to the water. Author David Divine tells us the startling truth about the historic evacuation, the blunders and the heroism. The story will grip your attention, stimulate your admiration and make you astounded at the commonplace heroism of the mariners who brought 338,000 exhausted soldiers to safety.
Royal Navy office David Divine was there, he brought suffering men to safety and has the award for heroism to show for it. His perspective deserves our close attention.
Things that I didn't know about Dunkirk-Royal Navy destroyers took off a disproportionate number of the defeated soldiers. They also paid the price with many of the tin cans sunk and many destroyer men lost. I didn't know that Belgian fishing boats helped in the evacuation. I didn't know that at the very end some 50,000 French soldiers, men who had fled the front line fighting, emerged from the cellars of Dunkirk where they had hidden in fear for days while other men died to hold the Nazi tide.
Divine quotes often from the personal reports of the skippers of small craft, civilian ferry boats and naval ships. The following represents the terse tone that we often associate with the understated British. Unbelievable heroism is passed off as a simple matter of doing one's duty, not special notice need be taken.
“The 'Socita' had by now gone over until her forward funnel and mast were in the water. Two enemy bombers again approached us dropping four bombs and machine-gunning those swimming and clinging to the wreckage. The 'Esk' kept firing and drove the enemy away. Commander Couch again skillfully maneuvered his ship around to the port side, the 'Soctia' having gone over until the port bilge keel was out of the water. Hundreds of the soldiers were huddled on the bilge and some of them swam to the 'Esk', while others were pulled up by ropes and rafts.”
We know about the men rescued but until now I had not thought much about the fate of the rescuers. Dozens of ships and craft went to the bottom, slain by aircraft bombs, slain by submarine and E-Boat launched torpedoes, slain by artillery fire from the land and slain by mines hidden under the waves.
Truly never have so few given so much to save and preserve so many.
“The Nine Days of Dunkirk” is an important book that deserves to be read. We all need to know the full and complete story of the greatest evacuation in history.
