Money for Nothing, by John Harman

Corporate Manipulation, Murder, Massacre, Bankruptcy and Blackmail in the Caribbean.

This 600-page financial crime thriller deals with a massive land fraud in the Caribbean, corporate manipulation, bankruptcy, murder, massacre and blackmail of some of the most powerful figures in the establishment. It was originally published in hardback and paperback by Headline Publishing.

Five men, all establishment figures and at the top of their professions set out to make themselves a criminal fortune. Within a year, they are multi-millionaires. Along the way they have engineered the bankruptcy of a major company, the imprisonment of an innocent man, the murder of one of their own, and the brutal slaying of an entire squad of soldiers.

No one ever connects them to these events and no one misses the money. It is the perfect crime. Until more than twenty years later, a beautiful girl tells Jerry Pilgrim the whole incredible story as they lie together one morning in a big bed in a small cottage in a pretty Northamptonshire village.

For Jerry, the knowledge of a secret that could destroy some of the country's most powerful men is just too tempting, and he sets out to commit his own audacious crime.

But someone else also knows the secret. For, wherever Jerry goes, death goes before. It seems that everyone wants ... Money for Nothing.

Review
'A financial thriller cleverly conceived and constructed.' The Sunday Times
'Harman's absorbing white collar crime novel slices deep into the fraud and outrageous crime that motivates even the most seemingly stable pillars of society.' Yorkshire Post
'Expertly woven web of fraud, suspicion and crime.'  Oxford Mail.
'There is no such thing as money for nothing. But shortcuts can be taken. This is the story of five professional men who did it that way and became millionaires within the year.Twenty years later an audacious entrepreneur discovers their secret and seizes the chance to make money for nothing. John Harman who used to be a journalist at Thompson House, Newcastle, weaves a good yarn and keeps the reader with him all the way in this modern sophisticated tale.' Joe McKiernon, Newcastle Evening Chronicle.
'Jeffrey Archer-type novel of five merciless money-makers and the man who plans to outwit them. Good gripping stuff.' London Evening Standard

From the Author
Money for Nothing was my first book. I'd always wanted to write a thriller and as my work as a journalist had led me to investigate white collar crime, I based this novel loosely on a case of land fraud which was never, as far as I know, prosecuted because the people involved were too powerful.

Some people might call it a financial thriller in the mode of Michael Ridpath's novels, but it's more than that. The story is about greed far more than it's about money; even the man and woman, who are really the hero and heroine of the story, are keen to get money for nothing. The novel is also about organised crime: because these criminals are really organised they leave nothing to chance and only make one, very small, mistake. The story is about how clever and powerful people can conspire together to rob someone of millions but who, when things start going wrong are forced to resort to murder.

From the Inside Flap
'Hitting an old lady over the head with a brick and stealing her handbag is a crime. Anything else is just business.'Armed with a precise knowledge of the ways of international business, five men, all establishment figures and at the top of their professions, set out to make themselves a fortune. Within a year they are multi-millionaires, having caused a revolution in a small Caribbean Island, the brutal slaying of a platoon of British soldiers, the bankruptcy of a major company and the imprisonment of an innocent man and murder.
No one ever connects them to these events and no one misses the money. It is the perfect crime. No one ever knows... not until, more than twenty years later, a beautiful girl tells Jerry Pilgrim the whole incredible story as they lie together one morning in a big bed in a small cottage in a pretty English village. For Jerry the knowledge of a secret that could destroy some of the country's most powerful men is just too tempting and Jerry sets out to commit his own audacious crime.
But someone else it seems also knows the secret. For wherever Jerry goes, death goes before. It seems everybody wants... money for nothing.

One of the outstanding storytellers of our time
By Amazon Customer
I first read John Harman some years ago; starting with Dangerous Assets in hardback. I have now downloaded him on Kindle and read all four of his novels again. He has such control over pace, characterization and plot. If you're an action adventure thriller reader, they're a must. How we have not seen a TV series or full length film adaptation of his work, I find hard to understand. Give us more, John
