Gr 9 Up-The material in this well-researched set is divided into 11 chapters covering the Colonial era, Westward movement, the Civil War, World War II, the Korean and early Cold Wars, and the post-Cold War era, including recent conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan. Each chapter begins with an extensive overview of the era, followed by date entries that vary from just a few lines to multiple pages in length. Entries about important battles are marked by a stylized sunburst. When appropriate, articles are accompanied by informatively captioned black-and-white charts, battle maps, art reproductions, and/or vintage photos; all are followed by further reading suggestions. Adding significantly to the value of the set are the numerous boxed articles. Usually at least a page long, they offer, for example, biographies of military leaders and descriptions and histories of planes, ships, and various weapons. Chapters conclude with excerpts from primary documents, statistics, and an extensive bibliography. Volume 4 contains appendixes of general statistics, military ranks, and military awards and decorations; a glossary; a comprehensive bibliography; and chronological and general indexes. This includes events such as the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War; the clash of the ironclad ships Virginia and Monitor in 1862; the Battle of the Little Bighorn; the destruction of the USS Maine in Havana’s harbor; the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo; the Doolittle raid over Tokyo in 1942; the Six-Day War in 1967; the fall of Saigon in April 1975; and the invasion of Iraq in 2003. By exploring the complex interaction between institutional and intellectual change, Reuben enhances our understanding of the modern university, the secularization of intellectual life, and the association of scientific objectivity with value-neutrality.

Important read.

Impressive analysis. Conclusions are objective and based on in-depth research. Reuben's work is pointed toward the serious reader and thinker who is concerned with the climate within our educational and cultural institutions. Her work is an historical study that draws attention to the modern imbalance of a society that has asked materialistic science to be a savior while dismissing the role of morality in maintaining boundaries that insure intellectual, emotional and spiritual health. The book is the best of this genre that I have read. Very readable. I strongly recommend it.

Current policies and wetland management are too frequently underpinned by a perspective that views agriculture simply as a threat and disregards its important contribution to livelihoods. In rural areas where people are entrenched in poverty, wetlands (in particular wetland agriculture) have a critical role to play in supporting and developing peoples' livelihoods. Furthermore, as populations rise and climate change takes grip they will be increasingly important. 

The authors argue that an approach to wetland management that is much more people focused is required. That is an approach that instead of being concerned primarily with environmental outcomes is centred on livelihood outcomes supported by the sustainable use of natural wetland resources. 

The authors stress the need for Integrated Water Resource Management and landscape approaches to ensure sustainable use of wetlands throughout a river catchment and the need for wetland management interventions to engage with a wide range of stakeholders. They also assess the feasibility of creating incentives and value in wetlands to support sustainable use. Drawing on nine empirical case studies, this book highlights the different ways in which sustainable use of wetlands has been sought, each case focusing on specific issues about wetlands, agriculture and livelihoods.

About the Author
Christopher Castellani is the author of three novels, including All This Talk of Love. He is the artistic director of GrubStreet and teaches in the MFA program at Warren Wilson College. He was recently awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for fiction.

you’re left feeling that you’re a better writer, reader

“The Art of Perspective” by Christopher Castellani. “The Art of…..” series is a collection of books edited by Charles Baxter. Each focuses on one aspect of literature and “The Art of Perspective” is devoted to the importance of who is telling the story and what implications and consequences ride on this choice for the writer, the reader, and the characters themselves. You’d have an idea of how enjoyable these essays are if you can recall being in a class and having the walls of the classroom disappear. Initially, you attended for a less-than-exciting reason, but soon you were hoping the class wouldn’t end. Chris’s own perspective on his art is shot through with a humility and a strength that confidently take the reader to knowledge in a way that’s … well…fun. And before you know it, you’re left feeling that you’re a better writer, reader, or (God help us) critic because you’re more aware and appreciative of much you’ve once taken for granted. Like his fiction, the essays in this little book sparkle and are propelled by whatever it is (because ultimately, who can really describe these things?) that moves a big talent. Just wonderful!

Goes beyond basic, obvious tips.

So, if you're a writer and you're tired of books that just define things in an over-simplified and unhelpful manner, then you've been waiting for this book. In essence, it assumes that you know what point of view is...but it deepens the explanation of why the narrator's perspective makes a difference in the work that you're writing. The logic is very clearly explained in terms of what each point of view method achieves in a story.

I think this is a nice step up from books that seem to cover writing techniques in basically the same way. Castellani's explanations go deeper into the close relationship between a story and who's telling the story. And if you really take your time with this book and think thoughtfully over its examples, it should illuminate your own best approach to telling your story.

A touchstone text for breaking away from accepting stereotype and cultural myopia in one's reading and writing.

Castellani provides much more than an excellent dissection of craft in this splendidly wrought discussion. He brings a wealth of experience as a teacher and conscientious artist to the questions of identity and stereotyping that challenge the twenty-first century artist/author. Castellani's work is a splendid optic for seeing the uniqueness and beauty of the multicultural and multigendered perspectives blooming in the arts today.
